That a piece of software has an evaluation mode doesn't make it free. Just that you can try it before deciding on uninstalling or buying it. In the case of WinZip, you can try it for 21 days.

Windows XP and Windows ME have compressed folders....which are actually zip files.. not sure if microsoft has a download for other versions.

There is also stuffit expander which is free....the expander bit that is. Go to http://www.stuffit.com/expander/ to find out. Usefull if you are only interested in extracting zip files, not creating them.

Also try http://www.pkzip.com/ . I haven't used this one for a while though so I'm not sure what status it is at....

If all else fails...do a Google search.

Only difference between a registered and a trial version of WinZip is the "I Agree" button that goes away after registering. But that's not the issue; There is no shareware version of WinZip. There's an unregistered mode that you're allowed to run for 21 days. There's a registered version that you're allowed to use indefinately.
That WinZip has decided not to smack you on your fingers after 21 days doesn't make it OK to continue to use it. In fact, every time you click that "I Agree" button after 21 days, you admit to the fact that you are commiting a crime, and can be prosecuted.
