  1. Although I'm not a newbie to the group, I am new to DVD-R burning. I am debating on whether or not to take the plunge into buying a DVD burner or just holding out a little longer with my VCD/SVCDs.

Regardless of the burner, what is the actual time it takes at 2.4x to burn 2 hours of video on a DVD-R? I now for full SVCDs on a CD-RW it is just minutes at 8X, but I don't have any data on times for 4.7 GB at 2.4x (or 4x for that matter).

    Thanks.

2.4 x is a DVD+r time. Minus R is either 2x or 4x. 1x is about an hour, 2x is about 30 minutes, 4x is about 15 minutes. If you dvd2one a 3 hr movie (i.e. LOTR) it takes 20 to 40 min to rip it, 25 to 40 min to dvd2one down and 1 hour or 30 minutes to burn it (I only have a 2x burner and use the 2x riteks) Still less time than watching the damn movie. I'm not going to lose sleep over 4x, 8x, 16 x burners with blue, purple or rainbow lasers. I paid $176 for my burner delivered from newegg.com, evrything playsback and looks great on my tv and settop dvd player and I'm a real happy guy.

  3. I have a Pioneer A05 (DVD-R/RW). At 2x, the speed of most DVD's in my price range, it takes half an hour to burn a 4.2 gig DVD. This is the same for both video and data dvds.

I love the sucker. I wish the dvds were cheaper, but I love my writer.

  4. Thanks for the real-time info.

Metoo: Have you explored generic DVD-Rs? I've been seeing posts in here that speak of sub $2 US per disc. I am not sure about compatibility or reliability.

  5. I got a pack of 50 Ritek G04s for $93.00 at hypermicro.com. They burn great at 4X on my A05.

I've not found generic Dvd-r's. The only generic-ish ones I've found were in Chinatown; 25 for $70 cdn. They only record at 1x, but they seem reliable.
