I'm trying to archive my families VHS tapes which go back 20 years. I know I can make the movies "look" better by using Virtual Dub for filtering (eg, sharpen). I wonder if this is a good idea. Would future viewers be better served if I tranferred my tapes to DVD with the least amount of manipulation possible (consistent with making a playable DVD)? That way, I preserve as much info as possible while allowing the possibility of filtering in the future to take advantages of new algorithms and techniques that may come along.

Even though I cannot predict what the future holds for VHS. I would go head and preserve the unfiltered video on DVD if possible. Then go ahead and manipulate a second version for viewing. The point being, VHS is more susceptible to the ravages of time.
If better algorithms do eventually come out, you will still have a pretty good versions available on DVD rather than further degraded VHS video.Hello.
