  1. Hi, I have been ripping DVD to divx for a little while now, and use DVDx to convert, and smart ripper (to rip!).
I have up until know been using the divx 3.11alpha codec, and not getting the greatest results.

I have been told to use Divx 5 (i have installed the Divxpro5 codec, build 480 or something) as it alows 2 pass encoding. Heres what i want help on:

I used DVDx as normal, chose divx5 codec, and set it up to 2-pass 1st pass, and encoded (only encoded 1min of the dvd, to check results). The resulting avi would not play. I am sure this is to do with 1st pass, second pass etc, but i am not sure what to do.
DVDx has the option to chose [video pass 1] and [video pass 2], but i haven't used this yet.

For those of you that are used to 2-pass encoding, this probly sounds kinda stupid, but i have been converting to mpeg 1 and old divx, and found this completely new, and have no idea how to approach it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

When I want to encode Divx 2 pass what I do is use VirtualDub.
    • Open the video file you want to encode
Go to the Video menu and select compression
Select DivX Pro 5.0 Codec (your system may say something else)
      Click the 'Configure' button
Select 'Multipass, 1st pass' and configure it how you want to.
Click OK to close that window
Click OK to close the other window
      Go to the File menu
Select "Save as AVI..." or hit F7
Check the box on the lower left hand corner of this window that says "Don't run this job now; add it to job control so I can run it in batch mode."
Type in a filename (something like PASS1.AVI is good).
      Click Save
Then go back into the settings for DivX and don't change anything, but select 'Multipass, nth pass'
Then save the file the same way by making sure you check the 'Don't run this job now' box. (maybe call it PASS2.AVI)
Then hit F4 to bring up the job control.
You should see your 2 jobs in the VirtualDub Job Control window

      Click 'Start' and your off!

    Hope this helps!
