  1. I have recorded old silent 8mm movies to dv then dubbed in narration later. When I transfer the video to computer via Pinnacle firewire card, the dubbed audio is not present on computer. The audio does play from the camcorder speaker as it is capturing the video. Other camcorder tapes originally made with sound do transfer sound with their video. The sony trv25 puts the dubbed sound on a separate track from the "original" audio, but the camera is set to equally mix the output of the tracks, which it does from the camera speaker. The software tried with the same results are: Studio7, myDvd4, and neoDvd4. How can I transfer the dubbed audio to computer?

  2. From the links below, I gather that most DV capturing programs will only transfer a maximum of two channels. It seems that the ones that are able to transfer channels 3 and 4 will capture them as separate wave files.

The last link has a suggestion which may be helpful (which I haven't tried).

Q: Can I capture 4-32khz audio tracks from my DV tape?

A: Yes and no. It depends on your player. Using Raptor Video AVI files are created. These AVI file formats are determined by the video for Windows standard. Which only accommodates one single stereo channel. I.E. left and right at 32khz. To capture the other two tracks set your player or recorder to output a single stereo mix pair. Then use your sound card to capture the analog mixed signal from you camera or player.

  3. Thanks for the info and links, but I finally found the root of my problem. My Pinnacle capture card apparently will not access the audio channels 3 & 4. The Pinnacle site suggested a workaround of playing my dv tapes to another dv recorder so that it would record all the audio to tracks 1 & 2. It would seem that even if I did have software that could handle 4 tracks, the Pinnacle capture card won't pass it through. Thanks for the help.

  4. You are right, I wasn't sure if it was the firewire card or the program that couldn't handle the 3rd and 4th channel. Nevertheless, I wonder if this suggestion would work (I also own the TRV-25 but I haven't had time to try this):

To capture the other two tracks set your [camcorder] to output a single stereo mix pair. Then use your sound card to capture the analog mixed signal from your [camcorder].
