  1. What would be the difference in audio file size in a 100 minute movie for the audio if I used Dolby 2.0 vs Dolby 5.1? I want to determine if it's worth giving up Dolby 5.1 for an increase in video quality when making a DVD2one backup. If the difference is only a few MB then perhaps it's not worth worring about.

  2. Just an estimate until someone who knows for sure replies:

    DD 2.0 = 200MB

    DD 5.1 = 400MB

Probably not worth worrying about, ESPECIALLY if you enjoy nice audio!

  4. Hi,

simmons3d's "estimate" is quite accurate really.
First thing to keep in mind is that AC3 Streams (Dolby Digital) can have various bitrates. So technically it is possible to give a DD2.0 a higher birate than a DD5.1.
    DD5.1 is usually 448Kbps which is (100min x 60sec x 448kilobit/8bits per byte) 336000 Kilobytes (328 MB)
DD2.0 is usually 224Kbps (just like VCD & SVCD standard) which is only half of DD5.1 in this case (328 / 2 ) 164MB.

So choosing DD2.0 instead of DD5.1 only gives you 164MB of extra space over a 4.3 gig disc. Since bitrates of video can run much much higher (9-11 Megabit) i would say it's nicer to keep the 5.1 audio for that tiny bit of quality loss then drop back to good old stereo and gain than bit.

    Hope this helps.
