  1. I need a program that will re-encode my MPeg2 files into Mpeg2 but with VBR 2pass with great quality. The reason being that I have a PVR 250 card that captures to MPeg2 directly and I need to re-encode these for lower file sizes. I would use TMPGENC normally but it crashes when I try and load in an mpeg2 file (it never used to - no idea why).

I've looked at a couple others like CCE and Main Concept but i think that only does AVI to MPEG2. I don't really want to use DVD2AVI first because that just adds another waste of time to my re-enconding and taes up massive file space.

    Can anyone help me?

  2. There is a version of virtualdub availabel which will open mpeg-2 files, look in the tools section. You can use that to frameserv to any of the encoders you mentioned.

  3. Thanks, that would be most useful (I wasnt aware VDub could do that see... mine doesn't). what do you mean by frameserv though?

virtualdub source code is freely availabe and someone has collected together a number of popular vdub mods and created virtualdubmod, which will open mpeg-2.

Frameserving is using one programe to decode the source material (and often pre-process such as using filters or adding subtitles) and then 'serving' this data, one frame at a time, to the encoder.
    Take a look here:-

  6. I've not tried Main Concept yet, but thanks for letting me know that. I'll try it out anyway and see how it is.

In the mean time though this frameserving thing looks like it's just what I need. I get to edit the mpeg2 file as I want in VDub and then encode it in my chosen app. Perfect. Thanks for the hlep guys.
