I have read all I can find on ac3 and encoding it. I need some clarification.
All the guides are how to encode ac3 from a divx (using various programs). I am trying to make a vcd mpg 1, NOT SVCD as most of the guides refer to.
1st stupid question....The word divx and dvd are synonymous???
meaning that the guides for divx and ac3 work for dvd?

If this is correct, I have read to use Vdub to make it a wav, and use THAT wav file in tmpgenc (i think?) If this is correct, where did I see this guide?

Because, even when I change the Direct Show filters to 2, tmpgenc still only categorizes it as video only. Should I ignore this and encode anyway? That doesn't sound right to me. And the "if this doesn't work, look here" asks me to d/l other programs besides Vdub. The guide I saw to do what I am thinking I need to do to make this work was pretty simple using Vdub (making it a loadable wav for tmpgenc which I have never had to use before). If that is the case, please let me know where to find the guide I saw and can't find now!

If you could help me, please feel free to email me with the answers, as I am going to get caught sneaking back to the computer in the middle of the night to solve this (with drink in hand after my husband falls asleep!)getting loaded and depressed and smoking too many cigs!

My health and sanity is at your mercy!!

If you try to use the ac3 sound in TMPGenc then it will not accept it...what you have to do is extract the audio from the movie with virtualdub and then convert the ac3 sound to WAV with either Headache or Besweet.

Extract the audio with virtualdub...but use direct stream copy and NOT full processing mode...then rename the audio's file extension to .ac3 You can then open this .ac3 file with Headache or Besweet and convert to WAV. Then you can use the WAV as the audio source in TMPGenc.

This guide uses Headache...I prefer Besweet but I'm sure they both do the job Ok.

Alright. I can handle that. I have another question though.

I noticed that I have 3 ac3 files and one DTS file and ine .d2v file. All the vobs & ifo files somehow ended up in "my documents" though! What's with that? Can I use the DTS file somehow or is that a part of the ac3 audio? I have leant the movie to a friend, so can I use these files to plug into Vdub and such? Or do I need my movie back to do it?

And is Divx the same as DVD when the guides refer to Divx? The guides apply to both??

    Thank you Tracey

Divx is a common video compression method (or codec) used in creating Avi's. There are several others and it is not the same as DVD.

Also, Goldwave will convert AC3 sound to Wav. Just load the Avi in and then select save. It's easy. You do need to have the AC3 codec installed on your system of course.

Hi Zippy...I have Goldwave...is there any disadvantage in converting ac3 to WAV with Goldwave rather than Besweet or Headache?...I've just tried it and it takes about 2 minutes with Goldwave as opposed to 30 minutes with Besweet It just seems too good to be true!
