The last time I tried this was almost a year ago which at the time was a pain in the butt. A year later, hopefully there are easier solutions to do the following:

    - Capture a sVHS or hi-8 tape into AVI via my Sony DV cam pass-thru
    - Be able to pause the capture as the tape is playing (Studio 7 doesn't allow pauses but instead cuts a new avi file)
    - Do further editing to cut out extraneous footage (Studio 7 works well here, not sure if Studio 8 is better ?)
    - No other editing required other than cutting out stuff
    - Convert to mpg and burn to DVD with longer than 1 hour (used tmpgenc before and myDVD which created the 1 hr limit thanks to PCM)

Q: Is that a one-stop solution for my needs given that my SVHS or hi-8 source isn't that great to start with?

Q: Is that less costly something else for my simple needs for burning with minimal authoring needs besides myDVD that bypasses PCM?

    Thanks a bunch.

Try Ulead MovieFactory 2 (30 days eval available)

    >Capture a sVHS ...
    Yes

    >Be able to pause the capture ...
Don't know as I don't use their capture module ... yet

    >Do further editing ....
Yep, multiple mark-in/out in a single operation

    >No other editing ...
Perfect Ulead MF2 is NOT really an editor (no effects, transitions, titles, etc)

    >Convert to mpg and burn to DVD
It has a decent Mpeg encoding module which is probably enough since your source is low-quality (I use tmpgenc for my DV video but ulead's built-in for my TV Capture)

It supports Mpeg audio (die! stupid MyDVD!)

    Good luck!

  3. I prefer Dazzle DVD complete.

For editing DV, Ulead VideoStudio 7.0.

For encoding, you are better off using TMPGEnc.

    They have trial versions.
