  1. I want to take a long mpeg file (100 mins or so) and split it into 10 - 20 chapters (like a DVD). Then I want to put half of them on disc-1, half on disc-2. These chapters will be indexable by hitting the >>| button or from a menu at the beginning. Finally, I want to put a graphic at the end of disc-1 that says "insert disc-2".

I need a tool that will do the splitting. Is there one? TMPGenc looks like it will at least cut a part out, but I don't think is saves it. It looks like it just removes it. So I could probably do it the hard way with TMPGenc, but I wonder if there is a split utility that will just break the mpeg into many pieces.

    Thanks for any help.

    TMPG cuts the MPEG.
Chapter and menus can be done with several authoring tools.
    The best is VCDImager.

  3. The best way to go about it would be to split the file into 2 parts, and insert 10-20 chapter points with any of various authoring tools - of which VCDImager is one as Truman mentioned.

If you physically break the movie up, you'll have a little 'hiccup' on playback at every point you cut the movie - chapter points accomplish this without physically splitting the movie up.

I haven't had time to learn VCDImager, and still use IAuthor, but again there are numerous tools that can do what you want.

  4. Ok, first let me say that there are easier ways to do what you want. So let me tell you how to do that first.

If you're encoding with TMPGenc, click on settings, then click on the advance tab, then double click on source range. From here choose the start/stop points you want to encode. In your example 0-50min. If you want you can setup a batch encode for both 1/2's of the movie, and go to bed.

If you made chapters by cutting the movie 20x it would take forever, eat up LOTS of HD space, and there would be a pause during play as the movie goes from one MPEG to the next.

Instead add your chapters with TSCV (this is a GUI for VCDImager which is a does program). TSCV will allow you to add an intro MPEG (first MPEG to play), Extro MPG (last MPEG to play when movie finishs, in this case your insert next disc), and if you want you can create mensus too. The Intro/extra/menu MPEGs can be motion mpgs or stills.
http://www.ttool.org read the guides first. If you want to make VCD you'll also need to create a CDI dir (the guides tell you how to do this, or just copy the one from Nero into the TSCV dir).

Ok, now to do it your way:
    1) Encode movie
    2) Under TMPGenc, File | MPEG tools, demux the movie to generate seperate MPV and M2P files (video and audio)
    3) Open bbMPEG, choose batch (to save time), read how to cut with bbMPEG in the guide to the left (basically enter all start/stop points in secs for each MPEG you want to make)
    4) Cue everything up and burn.

  5. I cut my movies into segments with TMPGenc just by loading the mpg back into it, selecting the frames to encode from and to, and it works great all by itself.
I usually break it up into aprox 10 minute segments, and have noticed that USUALLY, there is a scene change somewhere + or - 1 min of my mark. So a slight pause isn't AS noticeable.
