Can you give us some more info on what they were trying to sell you?
Philips and Panasonic sell DVD player/recorders that hook to the TV or Surround sound system. They run $700-$1000 US or so.
Many people on this site buy a DVD recorder that installs inside or onto a PC. You then use software to author video. The drives cost $200-$350 or so.
What you choose depends on what you really want to do. The settop boxes are the ultimate in ease and act like a VCR. The computer ones allow advanced menues and all kinds of creativity but it takes some learning to use them well (that's why were here).Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
