Some of us here, and on another video forum(and other friends of mine) have been testing WinDVD Creator to author our Mpeg-2 format caps, which they advertise on their website that you can import and author.

We've all found that it Will NOT let you import any kind of Mpeg-2 files (either DVD or even SVCD).

Why are they false advertising about that? Don't they think customers will notice it doesn't have a capability they claim?

I received a reply back from InterVideo saying that they would possibly consider making WinDVD Creator work with Mpeg-2 video some time in the future, but in the mean time they had no intention of correcting their claims that it currently did work with it on their website.

That sounds like blatant (knowingly) false and misleading advertising to me!

  3. I haven't used this particular Intervideo product, however their Wincoder and Winproducer products are fairly skimpy also. The tech support rep I dealt with in November wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed either.

Well I'm a relative newbie at video, but when I got their initial reply(and I quote):

"At this time, WinDVD Creator can only import MPEG-2 files up to a
320x240 resolution. Higher resolutions may be supported in a future release".

I knew something was wrong. That is NOT an Mpeg-2 resolution in any form at all!

The customer support guy called himself "an engineer". Whatever,...I think he's likely the same unknowledgable tool that you were dealing with.

But what bothers me is that they refuse to change their false claims on their website and want to continue to take money for a product that they admitted to me it will NOT do what they claim(work with, and let users import Mpeg-2 video files).

    Pretty outrageous!

Mpeg does not have any set resolution. If it will import mpeg2 at up to 352x240 then it supports mpeg2 like they say. Its misleading because mpeg2 at anything under 352x480 will not comply with any known video standard ie: DVD, SVCD, CVD, but its still mpeg2, and thats all they claim that their software supports.

Mpeg-2 in any kind of conforming video standard doubles the lines and can't be .....x240 at all, right?

    (that's mpeg-1, right?)

  7. MPEG2 is just another codec, you can encode to any resolution you want. But if you want that encode to play in your DVD player...

The legal DVD resolutions are 720x480, 352x480, and 352x240
The legal SVCD resolution is 480x480
The legal VCD resolution is 352x240

x(S)VCDs can have any resolution (but again not really if you want to play the disc on your TV). There really isn't any thing like an xDVD. If the resolution isn't standard it just won't work.

But if you want to encode a MPEG2 file to watch on your PC (like a DivX) you can choose any resolution you want.

If your resolution was only 352x240 than you couldnt have interlacing yes, but it'd still be mpeg2. Mpeg2 can be interlaced or progressive.

With this resolution (352 X 288), the 2 fields of the frame gonna be in offset possition between them if the source is interlace.
So, the output ain't interlace the way we use to know it, but it is not progressive eather.
Overall, interlace output of this resolution, looks better on TV. Better colours, motion. It is the best solution for me if the source is old VHS tapes

Since all this came up, I had a chance to try the PLUS version of WinDVD Creator. I found that it Does accept and work with mpeg-2 video.

I guess they should revise their website to only make that statement in regards to the PLUS version, not the standard Creator program.

I think Creator Plus is an excellent program.

I use a Dazzle capturing system that Only lets me capture into Mpeg. So that is all I work with. I never do any DV/AVI video.....

  11. I see on the Intervideo site where they now have WinProducer 3....a CD version and a DVD version. Anyone know anything about these firsthand?
