I'm burning raw .avi video files with .smi subtitles. In WinDVD Creator 2, the subtitles appear in the preview screen of the imported files. But when I drag the files for burning, the subtitles disappear in the preview screen and in the final DVD. The Sony player indicated there were no subtitles. Why would the subtitles disappear in the same program and how can I get them on the DVD?

Does WinDVD support subtitles at all? Possibly the preview uses DirectShow to preview your AVI (and the smi subtitles are overlayed by some DirectShow filter like ffdshow), but some other AVI reader (not using DirectShow) is used when the AVI is reencoded to DVD mpg.
Use some authoring app that do support subtitles, like DVD-Lab Pro (converting your AVI to DVD mpg first).
