  1. My DRU500A died yesterday...sending it back tomorrow.
The manufacture date was 10/01/02. It was working fine
until the other day. It sounds like I won't get it back for 2-3
    weeks from Sony.
Has anyone else lost a drive in the same date range?

did you ever update the firmware?
If so, is there a problem returning it because of that?

  7. My post mortum of my drive..

The drive had been running fine burning and reading disks. I have to admit that it sometimes it told more than a few seconds to read a dvd
    disk lately.
I started a backup of a few files to a 1x disk..brand unknown before I went to bed using NERO. When I checked it in the morning, it said data verification complete(I always do a data verify when I get done).
When I went to catalog the disk, it couldn't read it. Windows explorer hung trying to read the disk. The disk was readable on another system.
After screwing around for awhile, I uninstalled the drive in devce manager to let Windows XP find it again. Well the first time I rebooted I got a blue screen of death, first time I have seen it on XP BTW. Rebooted again and the device manager said CD-ROM...not SONY DVD etc.
Got with SONY service ..uninstalled it again and now it says SONY DVD again but it still won't recognize any type of disk. The lite come on when you place a disk in it but that's about it. I updated to 1.0f when it came out a few weeks ago, SONY service suggested I be at the level also.
Its going to take 2-3 weeks to get it back...not good.
