Thanks to you guys, we found the problem we think, and it should fix the issue on the vast majority of the feature length DVDs out there, if not all of them.
We also know why things like "Mr. Show" and other episodic DVD are f'ing up...BAD DVD Authors. Go to your room RIGHT NOW.
I'm sussing out a *good* workaround for this, so hang on
You guys* are great here at VCDHelp! forty-teo gets better everyday, thanks to YOU!
Any questions, etc, fire away. We are going thru stacks of DVDs now at 3.5 locations to make sure its AOK, so we are looking at like early afternoon for the updater.
Good job people! Good job!

I've noticed that the DVD spit outs and stuck 100 frame of 0 things I got with a few DVD's, went away when the DVD was cleaned (i used the dr fix it). Haven't had one problem DVD that this didn't fix. Maybe there are some that dirt and scratches aren't the case, but this seems to help so far.

Thanks fab!
I've wanted to suggest this many times myself, but the first couple of times people felt I was either passing the buck or in some way blaming them
Thanks again for this UNSOLICITED (heheh) user tip

... about the 100 frames of 0 thing:
I noticed this only happened when I was trying to encode a title that was less than feature film length. I tried to encode to SVCD a title whose length was 5 minutes and it caused the program to hang/fail every time. When I later attempted a title that was 97 minutes, everything proceeded as normal. My guess is when the software is searching for a spot to do the 1 minute test clip, if your title is too short, the test clip can't proceed and either spits out the disc, or just stops altogether. -
I thought about that too.... for example my Mr Show DVD has tracks that are 22 min's long and seem to get stuck on that 100 frame of 0 part. Eureka , divx transcoding works though!!!!!
I think you are right, this seems to only happen in the svcd/dvd transcoding (i presume cvd and vcd as well)for these particular DVD's and not the divx transcoding.
This short music video (5 mins) went fine into dvd-dvd.. Kai also said his test clips are short and he hasn't had the problem. Must be something else connected to it besides the small length of the tracks... -
Thus far I have Tried:
All are US Region 1, Widescreen, NTSC:
Office Space
BLade 2
Fast and the Furious.
I tried DVD-> VCD and DVD-> CVD and I get a 12k biles audio file in the end.
I do not get a preview. The program does its analysis, then 'XFerring' the video. Then it says it's starting to convert, it ejects the DVD, and says the conversion is finished.
For the fast and the furious I had already done it on the old version, and it worked perfectly, except for the fact that Toast said the 2nd mpeg was not Toast Compatable. -
Now that you mention it, DivX encoding does work on the exact same short title. I noticed the DivX test clip on short titles is a 4kb file than can't open in Quicktime or VLC.
Furthermore, I also noticed that on longer titles, the DivX test clip and the SVCD test clip are not the same clip, i.e., the test clip part of the process picks a *different* point in the title to start the test clip. Things that make you go hmmmm..... -
I've only tried 1 DVD so far... Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It spit it out maybe the first 3 times I tried. But then when I just left everything as default (i.e. didn't change the name of the movie.mpg file) it went all the way through the process. Dunno if that has anything to do with it. I didn't clean it or anything, just left it in the dvd-rom.

I didn't change the default name either. I left it as it was.
btw, I'll be making a donation probably on Friday, when I get paid. It's hard to find extra spending cash when you're a student -

The only DVD I've had this problem with is Frequency. I actually did try cleaning it, thinking that was the problem, but no dice. The DVD surface is in perfect condition. I'll try again tonight with different transcodes (SVCD, DivX, etc.) and see what happens.

If i create a divx with the same DVD it works great.
By the way kai maybe a second method for sending donations would be a good idea ... i'm a student without paypal or a credit card/checkbook. Maybe an address to send some cash when us students can afford it. -
Yeah... with the newest version I've had some... and I do mean a limited SOME success with DVD > SVCD.
My files are in a very strange filesizes, file 1 795.1MB, file 2 11.5MB, file 3 and whatevers left (rest of the movie)
You can see the whole issue over at this post:

Once I got a few issues sorted out with the original version, it worked like a charm. The new version seems to be a breeze to setup, but I've had no real SOLID success. -
Kai et al, please read...
I decided to run some tests tonight. Before starting, I checked that all the DVD's were clean and without blemishes.
Frequency - ISBN 0-7806-3156-0 - New Line Platinum Series - N6068
- DivX (1 CD) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
- SVCD (defaults) - test played ok, DVD was immediately ejected afterwards (42 progress window said '100 of 0', 'STATUS: Encoding Video...', '0 frames of video...')
Spiderman - ISBN 0-7678-9872-9 - Widescreen Special Edition - 09661
- DivX (1 CD) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
- SVCD (defaults) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
- DVD (defaults) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
Shrek - ISBN 0-7832-6314-7 - Widescreen & Fullscreen Editions - 89012
- DivX (1 CD) - test played ok but with serious pixelation at every scene change, full transcode started normally
- SVCD (defaults) - test played ok and there was no pixelation between scenes, full transcode started normally
Almost Famous - ISBN 0-7832-5643-4 - Widescreen Edition - 87818
- DivX (1 CD) - test video plays but with no audio, full transcode started normally, but also contained no audio... (first audio track on DVD is DTS EN, second is AC3 EN)
- SVCD (defaults) - test never played at all (an .mpv file was created but no audio files), full transcode started normally and the full .avi does have audio
Akira - ISBN ? - Pioneer Widescreen Edition - 11538
- DivX (1 CD EN no subs) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
- DivX (1 CD JA subs = EN) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
- SVCD (defaults, language=JA subs=EN) - test played ok, full transcode started normally
I also want to try problematic DVD's with DVD-image. Is there any point to this, and is 0seX the best way to create an image?

I GOT IT WORKING!
I'm now getting the same results as one of the other people here. Where I have 3 mpegs for vcd, but mpeg #2 is 12 seconds long. And only mpeg #1 is Toast compatible, Toast refuses to import #2 and #3. I'm very happy I've got it working this far. Now if I can get them all to burn I'd be super happy. -
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 are the only disks that I have run across that spit out after the preview (which looks perfect I might add). I mainly try to rip to svcd, but have also tried it in divx (haven't tried it in the new upgrade yet - 1.01 -, gonna do that today).
Really hope you guys are able to get this figured out.The disks are all in perfect shape and I hope to be able to keep them that way by hiding them on my idiot friends who keep saying "geez, its just a disk, mellow out!" when I yell at them for laying the disk in a puddle of coffee. Let them ruin a cheap cd backup or their own copies
Thanks again guys. A quality product.- Elreeko

Oops, forgot to add the company info:
Buffy is a 20th Century Fox disk. The ISBN # has been very carefully hidden and I can't find it anywhere.- Elreeko
