I'm sure this question comes up all the time as it is one of the most discussed topics. Just out of curiosity, I would like to know how many people actually re-encode the video in order to fit it in one DVD+R/RW versus how many actually split it into two DVD+R/RW?
Any feedback or comment as to why one is better than the other?
I personally prefer the two disc method as I don't have to worry about the countless hours of encoding (I have a P3 733) and it is a bit simpler.
I guess there is a third alternative where if your video is only a little bigger than the 4.3 GB threshold after you removed all the junk, you can just re-encode one or two of those VOB files as opposed to all 4 or 5 of them thus saving a little more encoding time.

long movies I do 2 discs
I really don't see a difference in picture quality using tmpgenc and with my P4 1.7 it takes only 4 hours to encode a 2 hour movie -
Maybe you will not notice a picture quality difference if you watch it on your 17 inch computer monitor or your 25 inch TV. Play it on a big WEGA TV and you will see the difference if you re-encode. It's only 80 cents more, less time, ,and better quality. Why not?
If I can abandon the extras and fit just the movie on one disc (picture quality conserved), I'll strip the unwanted streams and put it on one. The movie, in original quality, is all I care about. -
i do dvd-9 to dvd-5, and even with LOTR playing on my WEGA 29", I can't see whatever imperfections are made by shrinking the size. the same can be said for minority report. maybe i'm just lucy though. also, i don't rip menus or extras. just the movie.

If it is 1-layer... just copy
If 2-layers and movie can fit into one disk without extras... 1 disk.
If 2-layers and I like extras... 2 disks
If 2-layers and movie is too big to fit 1... 2 disks
Maybe one day I will try to re-encode.Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
Right, there is no one answer, so I won't respond to the question. IT DEPENDS!
But I don't spend hours reencoding, never do. It makes no sense to sit and stare at your computer screen waiting for encoding. I do it when I'm off doing something else, at work, or sleeping. So if it takes the computer 4 hours to do a double pass CCE reencode, it only takes me a matter of seconds. -
I normally just split it into 2 discs, but if I can strip out the extras and fit it on 1 dvd-r, then I'll do that. Basically whatever works best is what I do

the right answer is that it sucks to get up halfway through a movie and switch discs. period.
my 2 cents...

Thank you for your contribution to my poll!
Well.. hopefully DVD2ONE will have enough support and funding to develop additional features and making the product better. The 30 minute trial that I tested during this past weekend turned out really good. I really didn't notice a whole lot of quality degradation but then again I'm not a VIDEO expert in judging such things. -
I rencode all dvd-r's i use tmpge with the kdvd template, all movies look good, even 3 hr flicks.
-
I usually re-encode the movie and even on long movies like the godfather or saving private ryan I have not seen any quality problems on my 16/9 TV, but in some occasion (like in SW episode II) I keep everything and just put it on 2 disks.
I use DVD2DVD-R or DVDXCOPY 1.3[-Neoh*-]|[-Cheers-] -
I don't like to split the dvd just for the reason that I have to change disc in the middle of the movie
just my .02 cents -
i use one dvd-r all the time i rencode with rempeg2 i backed up lord of the rings on one dvdr in dolby digital perfect picture and sound quality
why use 2 discs when you can get the same results with one disc -
For me, the final verdict is not in yet but.....
Up until last night, I was a devout "Get all the content without any re-encoding and put it on 2 DVD-Rs" kinda guy. I thought I would hate it but changing disc is not that big a deal to me any more. So what happened last night? I got DVD2One. I will do some testing then we'll see if I'm converted.
Just for the record:
For DVD9s, I use DVDXCOPY, unless there is some kind of problems. Quick & painless. Click, click, wait, click, click, wait, done.
For DVD5s, I use the DVDDecryptor ISO read/write method. Click, click, click, click, wait, click, click, click, click, cli ck, wait, done -
yeah, really, if movies like LOTR (extended even) come out looking great anything could.

Damn... 888 views and only 41 people voted.
OK.. 100 of those 888 were actually my repeat visits but still. -
well. yahoo.com guy,you didnt leave many choices,so
i dont think any1 gonna vote, there are just so many
issues related to dvd burning, such as, stripping out
to 4.37, dropping chapters so it'll fit,then dvd2one...
its all gonna go that way anyway, one can spend 12
hrs or less recoding, still wont know what hell get til
ya burn an r/w,then gotta burn again to an r,whats
the piont anyway.... -
personally I re-encode to 1 DVD-R.
The reason I purchased a DVD burner is so I wouldn't be flipping 2 or more VCD's while watching a movie. I have rarely come across a movie that won't go onto 1 dvd-r. Products like DVD2one are great ( I used to use REMpeg2 ) as I wish to spend as little time as possible "processing" my DVD collection. If I can put up with watching VCD I can put up with a 3 hour movie on a DVD-r.
more 2c

Yeah, getting up to switch to Disc 2 can be a pain, but if you "absolutely" HAVE to have the best quality with minimal hassle, then this is the way to go. But everyone has a different thought concerning this. Besides, I enjoy reading about what others do. You're never to old to learn something new. Cheers

I can't see the what big fuss is all about with getting up halfway through the film to switch DVDs. It's only a short distance from the couch to the DVD player. For a 1.5+ hour movie, I would normally get up more times to get the tea, a snack, go to the loo, answer the phone etc
Quality is very important, so the 2 DVDs gets my vote (if 1 disk is not enough after stripping all other junk). -
well, thinking about it, i will probably go for 2 discs from now on. my lotr back-up looked ok apart from two scenes (the blackness of mordor just didn't agree) but something just aren't worth waiting for. i'm used to the break too, either laserdisc (try getting up FIVE times to watch the Natural Born Killers CAV boxset! no joke!!) VCD, SVCD, will it kill me to do DVD? no, and i do often need the toilet or a cup of tea. i suppose again it depends on the source. you may not want to get up and swap discs in the middle of panic room, but who cares if you're just watching a light hearted comedy?
-
I don't mind getting up to flip disks....I have plenty of VCD's, SVCD's and DVD-10's to occupy myself with....it's just that I would prefer to not have to worry about it...I do have a pause button on my player if the phone rings or something...
Also....in a country where cheap DVD-r's are around $5.00 (Pioneer and TDK disks are $10.00 or more) I prefer to spend as little money on a backup.....I don't want to spent a third to half the cost of a movie backing the thing up otherwise I may as well just go out and get another copy... -
I would recommend 2 discs better than cce encoding.......the reason is obvious,,,,, the quality does matter,,and it's the revolutionary of dvd!!!!!! what is the problem of getting up in the middle of the movie????? it don't take that much time,,and beside I have a 5 disc changer(sony)....
-
2 dvd's, unless it will fit on one without the extras (never watch those anyway). Quality is better, and so is time to rip/encode, unless there is a faster program for this than DVDX that I am unaware of.
