  1. I've got a Japanese DVD-9 disc that I want to back up. I know how to use IFOedit to create a new set of VOB files with just the main movie and the audio/sub tracks I want (to fit on 1 DVD-R).

However, what I'd really like to do is to set the subtitle stream to be on by default. It's a small thing but would be really nice. Can I do this from within IFOedit? The varies doom9.org faqs don't seem to mention anything.

    Thanks in Advance

I just did it for my Laputa DVD, I wanted to make a copy that I could play on a region 1 player with the English subtitles. I believe I just switched the "number" of the subtitle to "0".

It seems to work as when I tested it in my standalone, the subs came up without me having to switch them on.

Now if I can only get the chapters to start when they're supposed to and not have the movie freeze when I skip chapters...

  3. GreyDeath - thanks. But where/how do I switch the number of the subtitle track in IFOEdit? Maybe I just need to look/play around with it some more (but I can't seem to find the setting).

Aside - funny you should mention Laputa I'm trying to backup spirted away (region 3).

This was the thread I used when I was trying to force subtitles off...

What I remember doing to correct mine was:

    Go to the main movie VTS_x_x.IFO > VTS_PGCITI > VTS_PGC_1

    Insert Pre-command
(Set STN) Set Subpicture Stream Nr of the correct Subpicture stream.

You may not have to Set STN if their is one already there you may just have to change it's pointer to the corrects one. You should be able to tell all the subpictures when you first load the main IFO.

Then make sure to save after adjusting, and get VTS sectors. This took me awhile to figure out how to do, but you can do it, you just have to find out what Program chain tells the movie to set the subpicture and change it...the hardest part was finding where it pointed the STN.

I am sure their may be other ways to do it, infact I am almost positive thier are, but the movie I did this with would not turn the subtitles off any other way....I hope this works for you.

Goodluck....let me know it that works.

  7. Glock,

Creating your own DVD's may work a little different, I am not sure, I have not edited them in IFOEdit at all or tried to add things that were never their before...

Try that link I gave from above...

A few of these guys on this site are very knowledgable about IFOEdit...in fact Derrow(the author) himself used to hangout there.

Sorry I could not be of more help, it has been awhile since I have used IFOEdit
