All the xVid movies I have that I try to play seem to be VERY dark with the colors slightly washed out. Is this typical of xVID movies? or is there a way to adjust the brightness/contrast/colors???
I tried playing it in NDVD, PowerDVD, WMPlayer, etc. But it won't let me adjust those attributes when I play the file.

The Xvid codec can be changed to make it play brighter, but watch out, if you change it for playback any conversions you do will now be encoded bright !, and they may have been just fine if converted and played on a DVD player.
WMP
Play any Xvid avi and click the screen to pause
select file > properties
Click advanced select Xvid from list and select properties
PowerDVD 4
Select Xvid movie to play, click stop
right click screen or click tools (Configuration)
select Video tab > colour control > advanced
