my dcr120(i think, i am a school so I can't check)will not play hi8 and v8 tapes. Sony saves this functionality for the next model up and higher (sucks for me)

make sure you find out first.

  3. my friend has a sony digital 8
    I have a Sony HI 8

I can use their Digital 8 camcorder to view and transfer my "HI8" only tapes to my harddrive using firewire DV connector.

My older regular 8mm tapes will not work in their digital 8 camcorder.
I must use my HI8 camcorder with the s video/ composite conectors.

  4. My Sony 310 Digital 8 camcorder plays all my old 8MM tapes with no problems. I've never used Hi8.

The real answer is, some do and some don't. You need to check the documentation on the unit. My Sony TRV320 does and that can be real handy (sometimes my family gives me old 8mm tapes that I can play without a problem).
