Hi Guys - i posted this on the newbie area, but didnt have any luck, so htought I'd ask here:

I have a PAL (Australia) Hi8 Camcorder, and want to capture and edit down to SVCD/DVD on my PC. BUT I also have some old NTSC tapes recorded while I was studying in the USA. I play these on a PAL VCR that converts NTSC to PAL, but I understand this conversion is a "fudge" and that this converted signal is not suitable for inputting into a capture card. I do, however have access to an NTSC VCR I can play the tapes back on and send a regular NTSC signal into a capture card.

My question is: is analog capture "format sensitive"? Or are the PAL/NTSC stickers I see on the boxes of the cards only refering to the ability of the on-board tuner to receive local TV broadcasts (and for me this is not an interest - I just want to be able to archive my children's tapes into a digital - and region free - format to send to relatives around the world). My problem is I am in Taiwan right now - so can get cards for NTSC, but if I need a PAL card, I will need to ship one over from home. I dont mind, but I want to do it once and do it right.

I was thinking of the Leadtek Winfast TV 2000XP deluxe or the Aver DVD Ezmaker - can someone confirm thier limitations with regions? Thanks!

You should be able to capture in PAL60 (Pal VCR playing NTSC) or NTSC format, if your capture card just has driver support for it. I think Leadtek Winfast TV 2000XP is based on Bt8xx chipset, so you can use the general WDM drivers available @ http://btwincap.sourceforge.net. These drivers have support for all the capture modes you'll need.

ATI card sold in the USA are not PAL
Some ATI s sold in Europe are PAL compatable.
