  1. I just finished converting a xvid avi file to a vcd mpeg file. The result is 100mb smaller, and I noticed a reduction in quality, especially when you look at the text at the beginning of the movie, its about 3/4 smaller and a little blurry.

Just wondering if there is a way to have less quality reduction when converting from avi to vcd?

THE AVI SIZE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FINAL MPG. its the length and bitrate of the movie that does. vcd is lower resolution than the xvid file so it should be smaller and blurred.

352x240/288. divx files vary on resolution but most are around 600x250.

Also, whenever you are converting from one compressed format to another there will be quality loss. That's why it's always best to convert exactly once. From the original high quality video to the required end product.
