Ok, I'm new to the VCD world.. just picked up a Cyberhome 402 from Best Buy for under $30 (open-box, $20 rebate)....
I found a firmware upgrade on their European website.. its a zip archive containing a file named mtk.bin. The doc says to burn this to a CD named "Mediatek".
So... I've burned it in the Finder.. as a hybrid (this created mp3/mpg discs that the player would read)... no dice. Also tried in Toast as an mp3 and an ISO disc.. no dice.
In all of these cases, the player boots, loads the disc and shows no files... docs suggest that I should be seeing update instructions if it were working.
I have the impression(?!?!) that the .bin file might be a sort of "image" in the vcd world (remember I am new), but Toast complains that it is not an even multiple of 2352 (or something like that) when I try to drop it on as a VCD.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Although I have version DD1D on my cyberhome 402. I gave it a test to see if it would work with me. No problem. Came up and asked if I wanted to upgrade.
I unzipped the upgrade file with stuffit and burned it (MTK.BIN) directly on a cd-rw with toast. The toast settings were: Mac OS and PC (Hybrid) CD
The trick may be to ensure the CD is labelled as Mediatek - Dont forget the capital M. Another issue may be - ensure you do not use extended hybrid mode with toast
Dont give up, as this DVD is great, it plays jpegs, MPEG1, MPEG2, VOBs, everything without any authoring (when burned in the same toast mode stated above). A steal at $30. -
This becomes mind-boggling.. any chance you could send me that as a toast image file? (or Disc Copy .dmg)?
I *was* doing enhanced, but on your tip switched to "Mac OS and PC (hybrid) CD".
I drag and drop MTK.BIN on to the "Drag file and folders into this area".
I then click on "Untitled CD" and change it to "Mediatek"
I hit "record"..
I do see it adding Desktop DB/DF, etc files (2 files). Ironically the DF file is bigger than the update file...
total 3528

When I put this in the player, It comes up with the navigation-type menu, and shows nothing to pick from.....
At this point, I am clue-free
Really wishing I'd gotten a 500 before they went out of stock...
My Servo code is listed as DD08 (in the same menu as the region hack).
