  1. When i first started doing dvd video, i would encode the movies first using dvdx 1.8,then to 2.0 when it came out. THen i would author my svcd format to dvd using Sonic dvdit PE! The quality is good using this method, but when i realized that i can rip the main movie of a dvd and create ifo's for it or older movies i can copy the whole movie with menu's and chapters to a dvd-r or rw at the same original quality and subtitles and audio streams in most cases, i figure why go back to that old method of encoding? I read the new topics on the site frequent and i see alot of topics having to do with encoding with TMPEg, and dvd2vcd etc. If you have a dvd burner, i would like to know what advantage there is to encoding as opposed to ripping and recording which regularly takes me less than 2 hours as opposed to encoding with dvdx(which by the way, i think is the best encoder, took me no more than 5 hours for an average 120-130 min movie in svcd mode).

  2. This sounds like a great idea, do you have a guide. It's sounds like I have about the same equipment as you (Sonic dvdit). If you can tell me how to do I would definitly change my style.

The logic behind 'what to do' is relatively straightforward as follows -

    1. Can the DVD fit onto a DVD-R with no changes (< 4.3 Gbyte) ?

Yes - Simply, rip the WHOLE DVD, burn.

    2. Can the Movie fit onto a DVD-R if you strip the menu's and extras ?

Yes - Rip just the movie, recreate the ifo's with ifoedit and burn.

    3. Can the movie fit onto a DVD-R with the extra's stripped completely AND the extra audio streams/subs etc stripped from the main movie ?

Yes - Rip the movie, delete the extras, strip the unwanted streams, recreate the ifo and burn.

If still NO, then there is only one option left (to fit onto one DVD-R that is) and that is re-encode to get the bitrate down.

So finally, rip the movie, delete the extra's,strip the unwanted streams, re-encode the Vob's (<4.3 Gbyte), recreate the IFO's and burn.

There you go - a very simple way of looking at things !!

    Cheers,

  6. Teerex got it right! THat is the quickest and easiest way to do it. But the only issue i have is compatibility with standalones. Using Nero 5.9.17 dvd video, plays in about 8 of 10 players. Doing the encoding process, seemed to work in all players including the one's that wouldn't play the Nero burned one's. BUt as long as it works in mine i don't care.

I tried using record now max, always get error messages.
DVD decrypter is another way of burning, in ISO image format. Works good!

so is it possible to copy dvd9 to 1 dvdr and still be able to keep menu at beginning and still be able to keep original chapter points accessed from main menu, not bothered about subs and extras
the way i do it at the moment is by ripping movie then rip smallest vob which 9 times out of ten is the menu i then rencode with tsmpng and use workshop to remake chapters roughly where the originals were and use ripped menu as the first play then where it says play on menu i place a text space over it and it looks like it is highlited.
long drawn out process and in the back of my mind i know it's not the real thing

  8. To copy DVD9 usually you can split the movie between chapters and recreate the ifo files files using ifoedit. and copy to 2 dvd's keeping the subtitles and extra languages.
