    Of these choices, which yields the best quality result when going from
    DVD -> DVD-R
    DVD -> (s)VCD

    2 Pass VBR (VBR)
    Manual VBR (MVBR)
    Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)
    Constant Quality (CQ)

  4. This debate has raged here on several occasions. From the choices you offer it appears you are referring to TMPGEnc. With that in mind I'll give you both lines of thought.

    Some say TMPGEnc CQ provides the best results while others say that 2 Pass VBR is the best. My own observations have been that TMPGEnc appears to be optimized better for CQ. Both give good results but I would expect better from the 2 Pass VBR. Having said that I still tend to use VBR for SVCD because of size.

    If this discussion was about Cinemacraft it is much easier. Use 3 or 4 Pass VBR and the results are stunning.

  5. Whattya trying to do, start World War III again?

    This has been a very hotly, LENGTHILY debated topic.

    2-pass, or more, VBR may produce the best quality, most predictable filesize, and take the longest time.

    CQ may produce very good quality, less predictable filesize, and be faster.

    There are a lot of logical reasons for one or the other to have various advantages but to me, this is like debating how much ketchup to put on your french fries. It is a matter of personal taste.

    The folks at KVCD.NET have produced an AVISYNTH script which allows for multiple small test encodes of various parts of the video which is said to give pretty good filesize prediction for CQ. They also have some other interesting variations for non-standard S/Vcd. They have a certain amount of overzealous evangelism for their methods but they have done some useful work.

    Constant Quality will give the best quality at an unpredictable filesize in my opinion.
