Withhout downloading an analysis tool or importing into a high end program i'd suggest the following

USE MEDIA PLAYER 6.4 only as 7, 8, and 9 have a dumbed down GUI that will not provide this information..
Drag you clip to MEDIA PLAYER 2 (by the way, all windows users have this program, if you've upgraded to WMP 7 or higher, 6.4 still lives in the PROGRAM FILES>WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER folder

Now, with you MPG loaded ...GO to the FILE MENU, pull down to PROPERTIES..and you're there! On the advanced listing for VIDEO DECODER and AUDIO DECODER, you will see pertinent info about which MPG your MOVIE is---but the listings in the window will differ a little depending on the most recent third party DECODER-FILTER that windows has adopted to play MPEG1 or 2

DAMN themand Gates for not adopting FILE EXTENSIONs that would debunk this confusing widows situation!
At least we know an MP3 is sound!

    hello teva,

the easiest way I can think of (top of my head) is to just "try dragging the
    MPG source" into VDUB.
    * if vdub opens the clip w/out any errors, then next, you go to
.. File/Information... and see that the Decompressor.. says it is.
    .
    BUT,
    .
    * If vdub throws a tandtrum, then it's probably MPEG-2, or
    * If vdub throws a tandtrum, then it's probably divX, but that you don't
.. currently have a divX codec installed.

    Hope that helps.

  4. So, from what I have read you have to know weather it is Mpeg1 or Mpeg2
to convert to vcd or svcd. But it sounds like it is a pain to figure out if your
mpg is mpeg1 or mpeg2. When I use vdub, it gives alot of info but doesn't
say weahter it is mpeg1 or mpeg2.

    teva,
Sorry'bout that..., I forgot to mention (w/ reference to vdub) it does not
open MPEG-2 files, only MPEG-1 !! and of corse, divX (if codec installed)
    and other various AVI clips)

You can always use TMPGEnc. Select File-->New Project. Load your video file, and at the bottom of the main program page is all your mpeg info.
    Hello.
