Creating small AVI clips from DVDs

Hi everyone,

I am trying to create small (3 to 10 seconds) AVIs/MPEGs or any easily veiwed movie format on my PC from DVDs. I read some of the posts, guides, and FAQs but they all have to do with recreating the DVD in its entirety (unless I missed some posts). Does anyone know of some software capable of creating these clips? I don't even need to grab the audio.

I've already tried MPEG4 Direct Maker with mixed success.

Capture-card for DVDs?

Put the disc in your DVD-ROM drive and use dvd-decrypter.

Next use DVD2AVI, if you want them in AVI
it is the only program you need.


If you want mpeg, use tmpgenc.

tonyp12 is correct, but I'll add my 2 cents.....and hopefully explain a bit more.

1) You can use any DVD ripping software to get the VOBs to your hard drive. DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, CladDVD, even DVD2SVCD.

But, you do not have to rip ALL of the VOBs to your drive. You can pick which VOB(s) has the scene(s) you want and just rip that one.

2) Next, DVD2AVI would be my choice also. Just load in the VOB(s) and set the start/stop points using the icons at the bottom right corner. Then click file, save avi.

Just make sure you have the correct codecs installed to save the avi.

3) If you want an mpg, again use DVD2AVI. But instead of saving the avi, save the project. This will create a filename.d2v and filename.wav (or ac3) files which can be loaded into TMPGEnc (or CCE) to create mpgs. These mpgs can then be burnt to CDs so you can view the clips from your DVD player.

I just wanted to say thanks. I've been able to create the clips just as I need. I ran into some problems with PC friendly DVDs until I installed the ASPI layer (running 2000).
