Ritek media won't play on WinDVD PowerDVD

I recently tried some Ritek 1x Meritline DVD-R. I used MovieFactory to author and Nero to Burn. The DVD played fine in three different set-top players but neither WinDVD nor PowerDVD would load the menu; they would play the DVD from beginning to end-but no menu.

I previously burned the same way using some cdrecordable.com media and it had no problems with the software players.

I can see cheap media having problems with set-top players but I wasn't expecting problems with software players.

Any other players that seem to be more forgiving out there?

I was able to get my DVD-Rs playing again on my PC by doing the following:

Author with SpruceUp and create an image file.
Burn image file with Prassi.
