    I just bought a Toshiba A75-226 that I upgraded to WinXP. I also loaded a ton of XP updates (I believe that there were more than 60). Then I loaded my retail version of PowerDVD XP 4.0. The "bad" is that PowerDVD crashes when anything is selected from the program. The computer has a set of ATI drivers. I suspect that it is one of these updates and I am currently running XP and PowerDVD in a VMWare window on another machine trying to find the offending "culprit" by loading them 10 at a time. So far, I haven't found anything, but then I am not finished loading all the updates.

    Has anyone had any problems like this? Did you solve the problem?

    If I remember correctly, v4 was very buggy, but it's been awhile.

    From the PowerDVD webpage:

    What can I do if my PowerDVD does not work properly?

    Regarding your problem, we suggest you try the following:

    Update your DVD ROM firmware and driver
    Update your VGA and sound card driver
    Close other applications while playback
    Lower the resolution and color depth to 1024*768, 16bits
    Visit Microsoft website to download the latest version of DirectX
    Uninstall PowerDVD and then reinstall:
    (a) Start => Programs=> Cyberlink Power DVD (uninstall it)
    (b) Start => Run (keyin "regedit") => HKEY_Current_User => Software => Cyberlink => PowerDVD => delete the folder
    (c) Start => Run (keyin "regedit") => HKEY_Local_Machine => Software => Cyberlink => PowerDVD => delete the folder
    (d) Reboot
    (e) Install PowerDVD and patch file

    What the ... Just isnt going to happen ... thats not how you go about finding the problem .

    Check what the video chipset is used by the laptop , and then install drivers specifically written for it .
    V4 of power dvd was not the greatest , fine under winme / win98se , but not as stable under xp ... V5 was far better .

    Any codecs you installed , and forgot to mention ?

    IIRC, there was a V4, then a V4 XP. This was supposed to be the version written for XP (hence, the name PowerDVD XP). Always worked well in my W2000P machines.

    Only those installed by PDVD.

    Anyway, Krispy Kritter pointed me to the correct solution. Turns out that there was a complete "rewrite" of the original release. I had to download a "patch" that was the size of the original program. Installed the patch and everything seems to be flying in a straight line now. It's funny, but there was no mention of problems with the original version anywhere on Cyberlinks site that I could find. Maybe they just closed their eyes and swept everything under the rug.

    I like their products, but finding information on older versions of software on their webiste is a pain in the ass.
