Can someone explain the differences and which is superior/inferior? Or maybe refer me to a good article??
I've used ReMPEG (compression) with not so good results. My first attempt at TMPGEnc (re-encoding) was a disaster b/c I did not follow the guide correctly; I'm in the midst of my 2nd attempt (whilst still putzing around with my 1st attempt at CCE)..
thx.

Both programs are doing the same thing - re-encoding the video at a lower bitrate or, to put it in other words, increasing the amount of compression. People's terminology changes (I usually say I had to re-encode) but the end result is "the same".
A lot of people say that TMPGenc gives a better looking result than ReMPEG, but the latter tends to give less problems when it comes to remuxing the new video if you use something like IFOedit.
I have not had a great deal of success getting TMGenc generated video remultiplexed with IFOedit due to stuttering and the resulting audio sync problems, and my slow (by today's standards) PC makes many repeated encoding procedures unattractive. Because of this I have tended to use ReMPEG for that purpose and have no complaints about the quality of output. You may find your material shows up the artifacts more than mine, however. It is subjective and dependent on the content of the source material... you may not be able to notice the difference.

i think that rempeg2 is a "transcoder" and tmpgenc is an "encoder", both of them perform the "compression" function in the sense that the output file is smaller than the input file. however, the principles are quite different.
rmpeg2 intelligently lowers the bitrate of the mpeg2 video stream (and hence reduces the file size), but that trades off size for quite a bit of quality. tmpgenc analyzes the decoded frames in the video stream and re-encodes them "from scratch" at the lower bitrate. tmpgenc does alot more work, but usually also yields better results. -
if i was you mate i would stick at learning cce.
it is by far the best their is and a hell of a lot faster.

That's what I keep hearing, mate.. But I can't get the damned CCE process down (see my other recent messages) ... still stuck at the Avisynth stage.. and everything is messed up..
There's a good mate assisting me via private email... Hopefully, will get the job done... Thanks to all who responded and to all for sharing their knowledge.... -
why dont you try VFAPI instead of avisynth.
you can download it in the tools section.
all you have to do is load your dvd2avi file and press convert.

Avisynth is not required, you could also use Vfapi Converter. It will convert your d2v project file into th e fake avi the CCE requires. I've using the CCE=Vfapi mthod and get truly excellent results. Using CCE's 1-pass VBR I convert in real time, a two hour movie tales two hours to convert. Any authoring program will work including Ifoedit 95,just don't try to remux with Ifoedit.

Just use dvd2dvdr....it will do the whole CCE process for you. I started off with ReMPEG2 and did shawshank, the matrix, and sleepy hollow with it. The quality suffered. I then did reign of fire with TMPEG and the quality was a little better. But the amount of time was 24 hours for each. I manually did the movie Seven by going through the whole process and using CCE. THe quality was amazing and I did a two pass in 5 hours. I then did Minority Report through DVD2DVDR and the quality was great and it finished in about 6 hours.

Thanks all. Now how about a full/complete guide (in English!) for using DVD2DVDR--beginning with how to download the damned thing!
