or is an MPEG-2 file necessary? Can't you just burn the ifo and vob files to a dvd disc without encoding?

I would alos love to know this. I just got a dvd burner and was hopping of making some backups to watch and keep the bought copy in pristine shape.
Any thoughts? -
You can if it's less then 4.7GB. Which most are not. Most DVD's are dual layer and can hold 9.4GB. So you have to strip, transcode or reencode.
