Just installed my drive but have had bad results using "Datawrite Classic 2x" media, not being able to burn a single disc - nero keeps giving "power calibration error" and 2 other software packages also don't do any better.
Anyone had more success? What media do you rate?

I have Memorex DVD-RW media and they work great.
I also have Memorex DVD-R and cannot burn a single DVD succesfully
BTW I get the same error you do. -
I made a big mistake. I tought I can save money and I bought DVD-RW no name media for my new DVD-R A05 Pioneer.
I spend more than 200$ on that s...t
No one is working !There is no name on that so I can't tell you which media was.
Be aware of no name, guys !!! -
i have the cendyne DVR-105, which is the OEM version of the pioneer...and i have burned one disc so far, with a Maxell 2X DVD-R disc, and it burned perfectly
-
similar problems with datasafe when they do burn you cant read them back.
Best for me has been green top gen 4 bulkpaq 2x done lots with no problems -
where do you find these green top brand? and how much do they cost
-
Anybody tried the Ritek 4X that has been popping up on Ebay, and of course the usual places (meritonline, hypermicro, etc.)? Some places are as low as $2, much better than $8 for the Pioneer.
I have a Pioneer DVR-105 (A05) on the way, and just trying to get prepared.
I have already read the posts at cdrinfo about media compatibility, that's why I want to know what to get. -
And I tought that only Sony DRU-500A have problems with media. It looks like Pioneer is not better in this area. Good luck guys...
-
these work at 2X in the A04
[edit]Do not post adverts to your eBay sales!![/edit] -
nice way of promoting your sale ... if they work , why are you selling them
-
of course I want to promote them
I am selling them because I have way too many of them and I am upgrading to the 4X media
I no longer need these 2X media -
yes - but its against the rules of this forum .. except with permission, to sell on this board
-
I am not technically selling on this board...I am advertising as others do where to get cheap media...
-
You must contact the webmaster and get permission before you attempt to post solicitations or advertising. Anything that appears to be advertising or solicitation will be removed immediatly
-
I see...so how come all the other posts are still up?
I will no longer post mine, however, as I do not want to be in violation of the rules -
It seems after doing my own research that you failed to quote properly
here are the real rules in full
Quote:
You must contact the webmaster and get permission before you attempt to post solicitations or advertising. Anything that appears to be advertising or solicitation will be removed immediatly. This does not apply to LEGITIMATE news or user guides.
as my post is LEGITIMATE since people are looking for cheap media I will continue to help people find cheap media
go bother someone else -
since when is an advertisment for your products a user guide or a piece of news ?
not even close ! -
it is LEGITIMATE news that these cheap DVD's are being offered.
someone wants to know where DVD's are and I tell them
that is news.
I'm glad that you feel bad for your mistake in trying to sneakily misquote the rules. You probably thought I wouldn't check on that last line that you so conveniently left out. -
@ jarvis1781: You ARE advertising on this board and you are not fooling anyone.
Latest News and User Guides go in their respective forums and each have a set of rules. READ them.
If you post one more link to any of your sales on eBay and you have not paid for an advert, you will be banned.

OKAY, after (im)patiently waiting for my DVR-105 and my media to arrive, I am now BURNIN'!!
DVR-105 "bare drive" from ESBuy via Ebay - $242 + $15 shipping + $25 for the "software set" (a rip off because its PowerDVD, Sonic MYDVD, and VOB from Germany, and a ESBuy "general -RW and a -R. I don't see myself using any of these software packages, I will stick with DVDDecrypter, ifoedit, imgtool, and maybe spring for DVDXCopy someday!!)
The burner has the 1.00 f/w
Media
4 - DVD-R ESBuy unbranded (a little over $3 apiece)
25 - 4X Ritek unbranded - $48 + 11 shipping from Hypermicro
Also got some ESBuy -RW and some Verbatim -RW's, but due to my impatience, haven't tried them yet (1x or 2x)
Results
4 burns so far, using Nero 5.5.9.17, from previously created DVDDecrypter iso's, these are <4.7G DVD5's.
All burned at 4X, successfully played back on burner system and HTPC with Pioneer DVDRom (don't have a standalone player, my HTPC does just fine with my Mits HDTV, small plug for avsforum)
Absolutely no blockiness or pixelization, even trying to "stress" the system by skipping around by chapters, especially the last few, and by the navigation bar, and going through the menu scene selection)
So, I am a happy camper, as long as Hypermicro keeps these in stock, I don't mind paying ~ $2 for decent, reliable media, especially if it keeps working this well for me. Probably order a 100 pack in the near future.
I was a little afraid to order, because the website stated it was "1X to 4X", a little misleading, and after reading everybody's problems with the Pioneer f/w "whitelist", I was afraid I would be stuck at 1X or 2X with these. Plus, these are somewhat cheaper than anywhere else I have found for true 4X media.
Here is the ADVDInfo (for the Hypermicro)
00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 35 0E 0B .L...@....R..5..
FE FF 80 00 03 52 49 54 45 4B 47 00 04 30 34 00 .....RITEKG..04.
00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 06 06 0F 12 ................
Ritek G04, kewl!!
Will add this info to the media list after a few more burns, gotta try a 2 disk DVD9, but that's going to be more procedural than media type problems for me, probably. 8)
Anyway, if you are so inclined, give hypermicro a try. Very reliable transaction and shipping (NO, I don't work for them)

with my pioneer (After 5 tries/failiures).
About 1hr 45mins ago i bought some Philips DVD+RW (1-2.4x) media, still no-luck, the drive keeps makin a funny noise, like its "out of bounds" the same noise CD-RW's make- Windows, Nero & Instant CD/DVD says there is no Media (!?).
but can ppl please keep to the topic: "Pioneer DVR-105 - Please post your media results"

datasafe dvd-rw yellow and black top works everytime on xbox, dvd player wont play dvd-rw
datasafe dvd-r general purpose writes okay but does,nt play to end of film on any player and can not read to end of disc on pc or xbox , these disc are sh!t£
eminem -
The datasafe work on the DVR104 it is the writer not the disks. That is why it is very hard to find disks that work the drive is limited by pioneer's firmware.
Why not try updated firmware as this fixes some media problems. BE AWARE you can not down grade if it does not work. -
some might find this intersting: http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=9533&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Ive burned 5 imatations and 30 Riteks at 1X with no problems they play on my XBOX and panosonic DVD player, what are you guys talking .
-
These are my media results:
- Whitelabel color gen3 - 1x ok!
- Bulkpaq gen3 - 1x ok!
- Princo 1x - 2x for video and data - 2x ok!
I tested it only in dvd-rom drives for pc... in a thosiba 16x, creative 12x and in a dvd-rom of a compaq presario 700... All the brand work without problem... I usual burn video and data dvd's.
The dvd-r writer was Pioneer A05 (off course) and I use Nero 5.9.9.17.1. My computer is an Athlon 500.

I have an original boxed Pioneer A05 drive, which ive had for almost 2 months now and i've burnt 11 discs with it successfully no coasters what so ever. I've tried them in Playstation 2, Wintel 9663 standalone dvd play and a voxson which al accept them no probs at all.
RitekG03 discs which are surposed to be 2x media but the pioneer drive will only accept as 1x.
Even the Pioneer website showed a compatiblity chart which said they were 2x.
Also just upgraded from firmware 1.0 to 1.21
Surposedly the pioneer a04 is surposed to pick them up at 2x.
Anyone else had this trouble. -
