  1. I'm using TMPGEnc to try and convert the avi to svcd, since it is XviD and the sound is AC3, i didnt extract the sound just like the guide said not to. I encoded the file and it gave me great video but no sound.

So, then i extracted the audio. I tried first with virtualdub, which didn't work, and then I tried with avi2wav, which seemed to work --> at least it gave me a .wav file.

I then went back into TMPGEnc and tried again, this time i used the .wav that i got from avi2wav as the audio source. When I encoded the file this time, i got sound but is was a fading, throbing, noisy mess that didn't sound good at all.

What do I need to try.

And one more thing, how come when I have two XviD files that are the same size (699) MB, one of them can be encoded into svcd fine but the other one is 33% too large to encode without spliting it??

  2. This is what the guide said... "But if you are converting from dv,huffyuv, mjpeg, avi with ac3 you can leave the audio same as the video." But when I do that, i get no audio when I convert.

What else do I need to do.

  3. Well, i finally got the sound to extract correctly --> I had to use GoldWave.

So, I guess my only question is this........ when I have two XviD files that are the same size (699) MB, one of them can be encoded into svcd fine but the other one is 33% too large to encode without spliting it. Why is this???

  4. Use this guide when dealing with AC3 in the future.

Mpeg 1/2 is burned onto CDR/RW in mode 2, which means that the length of the movie is taken into account. You can burn Mpeg 1 (standard) file of 80 min onto 700 MB CDR/RW since 1 min=10 MB. Mpeg 2 format normally allows you to fit approximately 38-60 min onto 1 CDR/RW depending on your bitrate. AVI files, however, can be compressed with different rates, most movies are compressed to 700 MB regardless of the length of the movie. So, if one of your AVI files is 38-60 min long, it will fit onto 1 CDR/RW when encoded to Mpeg 2 (depending on bitrate). The other file might be 100 min long so it will need to be split when encoded to Mpeg 2.

    Regards.

  5. O Kewl, Thanks for your explanation of differing AVI bitrates, that makes sense as to why some will fit and some wont.

As for using the guide to convert the audio..... It worked well, but it gave the exact same file size and bitrate as when i used GoldWave, except using the guide (virtualdub and HeadAC3he) took about 4 times longer than using GoldWave. So, you might want to check out using GoldWave and see how you like it.

    Thanks.
