I was working on one DVD and I was tryong to get rid of extra stuff. When I was choosing sound there were 3 English audio tracks.
1. DTS 6ch 48Kbps
2. Dolby AC-3 6ch 48Kbps
3. Dolby AC-3 2ch 48Kbps (I understand that this ias encoded only 2 chanels)
My question is... Which one to coose. AC-3 or DTS ? Is there difference in size or quality ? If I pick one and my receiver doesn't have encoder for that type (my has DTS and Dolby Digital so I can't test it), could be that problem ?
Thanks.

if you use DTS on your dvd-r you will also have to include either the ac3 5:1 or the ac3 2ch or the dvd will have no sound ..
-
If u use DTS, you will need a decoder, for ur settop player. So if you borrow them to ur m8s, they will hear no sound if they have not got a DTS decoder, so u must always include a AC3 5.1 file, This way you get best of both worlds, and alway put ur AC3 file first in Maestro or any other authoring program.

I usually take the 6ch and the DTS. My amp will detect either. As for having to take the 2ch for the DTS I don't think this is correct. I have ripped quite a few DTS disc without a 2ch ripped. They all play fine. I personally thing the DTS is better.

What about size and quality ? Is there difference ? -
Hi Guys, be mindful though DonPedro. If you choose the DTS track you will not be able to import into DVDMaestro should you choose to use that piece of software. Maestro only supports AC3. I prefer DTS myself because I think it sound much fuller and more dynamic. Wish I could use the stream in Maestro.

NOT TRUE, dvd maestro supports AC3 and DTS tracks, but i dont think spruce up allows DTS tracks. But not 100% on that.
i use maestro version 2.9 build 2915a -1234 -
Maestro supports DTS , but to be dvd compliant you are required to have a LPCM or ac3 stream also .. load one of theose first and then DTS track ..
-
WOW!! My Apologies... I have been under the impression for a LONG time that Maestro could not handle DTS streams. This is FANTASTIC news for my ears...

Whenever I author discs with DTS, that is the only audio stream I use. I never have included the AC-3, and all of my discs are compliant. They just need a DTS decoder to hear the audio. -

They actually AREN'T compliant, that's what BJ_M was saying. You've just been very lucky. If you check a large variety of players, you'll probably find a number of players that will play your disc with NO SOUND--even if they do incorporate a DTS decoder. That's one major reason why AC3 has such a lock on encoding popularity.

What program are you guys using to extract the DTS track so that I can import it into Maestro?
Jcuervo811 -
I know that DVD decryptor and SmartRipper both extract DTS, not sure about others. I have seen the DTS called "Unrecognized Stream Type(DTS)" or something along those lines on a some programs, but it would still rip correctly.

Hey guys,
I have ripped the movie File (.m2v), the AC3 sound file (.AC3) and the DTS sound file (.DTS). I have compressed the m2v file with CCE so that I can fit in one DVD5 the movie and both sound files.
As always I used Maestro, I have imported all the media files, the compressed .m2v file, at first sound file I have put the .AC3 file, I have sincronized the AC3 File with the movie, and at last, I tried to import the .DTS file, but maestro didn't let me import the file.
So I have two questions:
1st: Does anyone know how I can import the DTS file to Maestro?
2nd: If I can import the .DTS file, do I need to sincronize the .DTS file with the movie, like I have done with the AC3 file? (I supose so, but I am not sure)
Note: I have a Pal system, I use DVD Decrypter to rip, DVD2AVI and VFP to convert the file to CCE (2.64) and Maestro to compile and author the movie.
Best regards. -

Which version of Maestro are you using? I believe only the most recent version(s) of Maestro will accept DTS. Last one I know of was 2.9/2915a.
Scott -
I am using the version of Maestro 2.9 - build 2915a - 1234. But this version don't accept DTS files. I will try to see if there is a new version.
-
they all can use DTS files going back to 2.5 at least ... when we bought it originaly ..
ussually dts is delayed different than ac3 -- but it depends how you do your encoding ..
before importing a DTS file - you must import a ac3 file first i believe. -
Let me explain beter. Maestro let me import the DTS file, I have done that already, I have imported first the AC3 file and than the DTS file. I have put the files in the project by this order, but when I make the sincronization of the Sound files (Create Sync Audio Track), as usual with AC3, Maestro let me Syncronize the AC3 file but when I try to do the same with the DTS file it gives me an error: "Audio type not supported for Sync Audio (0xc10c0025)".
Does anyone know how can I syncronize the DTS audio file? -
i just slide them on the audio track line .. same as you can do with any audio track
-
But doing that, it will not be a real Time Sync. Some DTS files has delays and would be difficult to make a precise time sync with the slider.
