I just managed to download my first movie and after many hours of fighting through this ordeal, I am unimpressed with the picture quality. I used the Ulead studio6 to capture the picture in MPEG2 640X480 (25), 3000Kbps. In capturing the number of dropped frames was minor but when I tried to burn with Nero it did another conversion and took for ever. Then when I it completed the burn I was disapointed with the picture quality. Someone suggested caturing in AVI but I found trying to do that was not good as the number of frames dropped was very high. Anyone that might be able to help ?
    Thanks

Don't ever let Nero encode for you as it gives you horrible results.

    RBM227:

It looks to me like Nero tried to re-encode to "standard" VCD or SVCD compliance. Since it is already an MPEG-2 file, I suggest you let select SVCD in Nero, but turn off the compliance checks and try using Nero to burn only. This will create an XSVCD, but maintain the resolution of the original. Also, in Nero, make sure you have it set to PAL (I assume Canada uses the PAL format since it was recorded at 25fps.) 640 x 480 is an "odd" resolution for most standalone DVD players, and your stanalone DVD player may, or may not be able to handle it. Try it and see. If it doesn't work then I suggest capturing to either 480 x 576 (PAL SVCD) resolution or 352 x 576 (PAL CVD) resolution and trying them. Lastly, you could try 720 x 576 (PAL DVD resolution) to create an XSVCD. With all of the above procedures try to capture at 2520 kbits/sec video bitrate as that is the approximate max bitrate in the SVCD specification. Again make sure you burn to SVCD in Nero and turn off compliance checks.

I truly believe the above mentioned steps will get you a much better quality video than your original procedure.

Be advised usually encoding strait to mpeg format does not produce as high a quality video as capturing to avi format and re-encoding, however I see you were having problems capturing to avi format.

We also use the NTSC and I have tried saving in AVI as well as Mpeg2. I converted the AVI one to mpeg using PGEEnc and then burnt it after turning off the conversion using Nero. It worked but picture had some distortions in it. When I tried to burn the Mpeg file I downloaded with studio6, I turned off the conversion again but my DVD wouldn't read anything but the menu. I am taking a rest as this ids getting frustrating to say the least. I have been trying for a week to get something decent and if it is possible maybe someone can tell me exact steps and what to set the settings at.
    Thanks
