    Tried converting the avi file as though it was divx but couldn't rip audio using virtual dub and then convert with tmpgenc.

    Can anyone help with this one?

    Deal with audio as per this guide.
    Then load your audio and video into TMPGEnc as per this guide OR using frameserving.
