  1. First off let me give you the heads up, I dont know much when it comes to computer HARDWARE. I've installed RAM and a video card on my own and tahts it. WIth that said i figured i could install a dvd-r/rw drive too, so we'll see. Anyway, im running a computer that has a 40gb hd and a smaller back up hd with a cd rom and a cd rw. With no more exp. bays i need to replace one, of course. My question is which one and someone PLEASE explain all the IDE and master/slave stuff to me. I'm not stupid just, at the moment, ignorant. so someone help me out and hopefully ill be on my way to burning dvd. thanks in advance.

a DVD-RW or DV+RW should be the master, which is the first slot on the ribbon.

    Master-First Device on the Ribbon
    Slave-Second Device on the Ribbon.

    A DVD-RW or DVD+RW is also a CD-RW and a CD-ROM, I'd replace the CD-ROM because u don't need 3 CD-ROMs'.

MAKE SURE IT IS THE MASTER. It needs more bandwith than the CD-RW.

    It's very easy

    1.) Open case
2.) Find the first slot on the IDE cable (trace it from the motheboard)
3.) Remove whatever is their by unplugging the cable and power.
    4.) Install the DVD writter
5.) plug it up, close up, reboot.
