  1. Discovered something very interesting.

I have read, and always assumed, that when re-encoding a ripped DVD down to SVCD specs with TMPG you should always select non-interlaced as the 'destination' format.

(We are PAL here in Australia - You select interlaced or non-interlaced as the source format depending upon the encoding method of the original DVD, of course)

But... I have been doing a rip of Steely Dan - Aja, and found that with a destination format of non-interlaced, I got nasty interlacing artifacts in my resultant MPEG.

By selecting interlaced, they all went, and the resultant quality was infinitely superior.

So now I'm going to be checking when I next do a 'backup' that the result isn't better interlaced, than not.

  2. I just did steely dan 2 against nature and I got bad motion trouble too, it happens with some DVD's. When you fixed it, did you turn of force film in DVD2AVI and go interlaced 29.9 frames?

  3. PAL - region 4... Didn't have to worry about that.

All I had to do was set the Video encode mode in TMPGEnc to 'interlaced'.

  4. Scumbag,

If the original DVD is interlaced then you should probably encode it as interlaced video.

If the original DVD is progessive, then you should encode it as progressive video.

Most PAL (region 4) DVDs I've seen (but not all) have the main movie in progressive though many are incorrectly reported as interlaced. You should be able to tell just be seeing a few frames of it playing.

  5. Michael,

That's the conclusion I've come to. I've also noticed that most of our DVDs are reported as interlaced, even though it appears they have been progressive.

Steely Dan Aja is the first one i've encountered (reported as interlaced) that doesn't look fine when encoded as non-interlaced. All the rest have, though now that I know, I'll be doing a quick check first.
