  1. Hi

I am capturing with Virtual Dub from VHS source, to encode it for SVCD with TMPEGEnc, and I have a question:

What audio parameters are the necessary for SVCD, 44 or 48 KHZ?

I have problems capturing above 352x288, Virtual Dub gives me the next error: "Video Format not compatible".
I have PCTV Rave and I have read in the manual that support 640x480 (for example)...

    Thanks a lot

The SVCD standard specifies 44.1kHz audio.

You can use a 48000 sampling rate for SVCD,44100 is spec.,but if your DVD player will support SVCD with 48000 it's ok. I've tried 6 different DVD players and they all except 48000 on SVCD. Most DVD will support 48000 on SVCD because 48000 is the standard for DVD.

  5. Unless you have a good reason (e.g., plan on migrating your video files to DVD at some point), stick to 44.1 kHz sampled audio. There is no point in making something trivially off spec as there are some players that don't like 48 kHz audio on SVCDs.

  6. umm i am really confused with the spec of Super Video CD. I have downloaded the specs from philips, and they say SVCD support variable bit rate for video and audio (and in some sites i have read that not). So I can use VBR audio with SVCD? The correct bit rate to use are 64-384kbps I am wrong? Can you recommend me a MPEG-1 layer II encoder that have good support for VBR? (For what I have read TooLame is very fragile in VBR)

Another question, can I use mono instead of stereo in SVCD?

    Thanks!

I think you can use both VBR for video and audio. However, VBR for audio may not be well supported on many stand-alone players. It is probably safer to stick to CBR for audio. You are not going to save much space anyway.

Mono? Yes, you can for SVCD.
