Be carefull of APEX players and particularly the AD-1500. The AD-1500 has many varieties. The latest does not support any type of VCD. Try to get a look at the box and see if VCD is listed on the box. If it is, it is probably one of the older ones that does support VCD.

  3. Best thing to do is burn the test vcd on this site and take the disc to the store and try it out yourself.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

  4. You got good sound advice already but I'll throw this in.
Check out www.nerd-out.com for AD-1500 and/or float us your serial number so someone can read the date on it. Anything after mid or late february and you're asking for trouble with VCD.

  5. well i checked the box, and it only says "dvd/cd/mp3" so i'm guessing the Apex AD-1500 won't play VCD's that i make myself. What DVD player do you all suggest i buy that will work with CD-R's or CD-RW's?? I have a Sony DVP-S530D right now, but it just won't read any of my VCD's...

I don't know what kind of stores, you have in your local area, or where you are located for that matter. What I would suggest is to look at the various DVD players(front panel, description and boxes, if you can see them) in your price range, your area. Make note of make/model numbers of the ones that look promising, or definitely say they have VCD and SVCD support. Then, look closely at the DVD players list this site to check compatibility. When you look at the listings make sure you read all of the reports and comments, as these may give you additional insite. Then I would make my choice based on the above mentioned factors, balancing it against price.

If you want to know what standalone DVD players I have, I have an "older" Apex AD-1500, Magnavox MDV450SL (about the only place I can find with any left is Blockbuster, online, but they may have some in your local blockbuster store. It goes for about $90) and a Philips DVD-724AT. All of these support VCD, XVCD, CVD, SVCD and XSVCD on both CD-R and CD-RW. I have tried them out with most of Kwag's templates, with the only problem being I had to change the resolution on the "X3" template to 544 x 480.

  7. Try a VCD burned on a CD-RW. Your Sony can probably only handle the CD-RW. Cannot handle the CD-R format.

I have a Sony DAV-S300. Will only read VCD burned on CD-RW.
Even so, still has glitches when playing VCDs with Menus and other extras.
I won't buy Sony DVD player again, unless they add more features and better compatibility with VCD/SVCD, etc.

However, if you have the money, I recommend buying another player with more versatility.

Try reviewing the DVD player comments on this site. Tons of useful information in helping you to make your selection.

    Good Luck!

I have a Mintek DVD-2580 I bought at Bestbuy last Christmas and it plays everything I've thrown at it so far. I've just got into burnig svd's on cd-r's and it reads them just fine.
If it works, don't mess with it, don't tinker with it and don't break it.

  9. ok very simple.. I do have an APEX - AD1500 and it does play VCDs and SVCDs.. I also just bought an AD1201 which also plays both VCDs and SVCDs.. without any problems.. I dont know about any issues that might be out there regarding Apex, but I've had my 1500 for about almost 2 years now.. and never ever have had any problems with it...

    Hope this helps
