I am trying to understand exactly what Divx does and I am assuming after reading many blurbs on the divx site is that it compresses video (avi in my case) and retains good quality compared to compressing it to mpeg or real media files. (I have Vegas video for this purpose). I purchased DIVX Pro and when I try to load an AVI file into divx it comes with an error message saying it will not open this format. I have crawled through their forum to no avail. I am still waiting on their email to let me post in their forum... wait...wait... tired of waiting. So what do I have to do to get this player to play a video??? Will this player (divx) get me better video quality w/ same or less file size than mpeg or real media??? I would like to send home movies made from DV camcorder edit that on Vegas Video and then save as an AVI file then compress file w/ Divx, is the last step just wishful thinking??? I can do the first couple of steps just fine, so it all lies now on Divx... I am confused by why divx will not play my AVI files or any other file types. Yes, it is regitered and supposedly ready to go...

DivX is a codec which will allow other software to encode to DivX format. It will also allow you to play back files encoded to DivX. What it will not do directly is encode anything to DivX.

One of the best tools for encoding to DivX is Virtualdub (freeware). However, you will need a guide to help you if you are to get the best quality encodes. Look at the DivX guides at http://www.divx.com/support/ or www.doom9.org (for more advanced guides.)

If you just want to get started without getting bogged down, try Easydivx http://easydivx.does.it/ to start with.
