some questions from someone who hasn't a clue so I'll be grateful for your help:

    1) what software do you use to create a DivX vcd/dvd (are they even burned to dvd?)

    2) the DivX files I've download are generally about 600mb so they would be burned to CD?

    3) I won't have to wait for hours of encoding, it's like having an mpeg ready to burn to dvd?

    4) am i wrong in thinking that the DivX Players also play Xvids?

    TIA

    1. You use the Divx or Xvid codec and a front end program to feed the codec. Some programs for DVD to Xivd/Divx, AutoGK, FairUse Wizard, avi.NET and a few more. You can burn them to DVD or CD as a data disc.

    2. Probably about 700MB, and yes, they are set up to burn as a data CD. However, you would get much better quality creating a 1500MB file.

    3. Yes, it will take a few hours or more, depending on your CPU speed.

    4. If the Xvid uses the same format/settings as a Divx format that is Divx player compatible, they are more or less interchangeable.

I think I've phrased the question incorrectly - or I've got this totally wrong - what I mean is say I've download a DivX file and I want to put it onto a CD to play in a DivX player.. that won't take hours will it? I was assuming it doesn't need encoding (if I'm using the correct terms), it would be like having an mpeg file ready to make a dvd with, like when I've converted a divX to Mpeg the mpeg only takes about 10 mins to put on dvd? The only reason I was thinking of buying a DivX player was it would save hours of encoding to mpeg and I could put the divx straight on cd and play it

Just create a data CD with ImgBurn or burnatonce. Takes < 4 minutes on my system.

Not a problem. Like Mats said, just burn it to CD as data. You can also use a DVD and put several on there as data and your player should work the same with them. Many of the Divx/Xvid files off the net that are about 600 - 700MB were made for playback on a Divx player. You may find a few odd ones, then you might have to re-encode or modify them slightly.
