  1. I am sorry I am a bit of a newbie

I have been having some trouble with my DVD player and playing VCDs. I think my problem is when I convert an AVI file to MPG to burn to a cd. I was looking into getting a DVD burner and was wondering if I would still have to convert an AVI movie to MPG to burn to a DVD, if that makes any sense.

    Thanks

  4. Lots of avi files are already so so sources. Making VCDs out of them is only going to make them look a lot worse. I just hope you know what to expect... Lots of people like it, lots don't.

  5. I have already made AVI files into VCDs. They look ok. My Real Question is do I have to mess with the AVI file to burn to DVD format?

Oh yes, and the encoding time is a LOT longer if you want good quality.
DVD is mpeg-2 at 720*480 (or 576 for PAL). Uses bitrates up to 9.8Mbps and takes a lot longer to encode from divx than VCD. You can use VCD resolution video with higher bitrates but the quality will be much lower.

You should load your "avi" into VirtualDub and let it check for errors before trying to convert to mpeg1 or mpeg2.

If this goes ok then I would convert the file with TmpgEnc and choose a template that fits to the target.
