Sony DRU500a Firmware 1.0f All is right with the world

I went to go get the 1.0e update and the link was broken on the USA website. So I went to the Japan site and downloaded what I thought was the 1.0e update. To my surprise, it was the 1.0f update. Great! I'll just install that. Works perfect. All the media that I had that it wouldn't even recognise, it now reads and burns perfectly. I'm so very happy now. Way to go Sony... It took a while, but way to go.

Can you state your media list that DRU500A wouldn't recognize? It will be helpful for other DRU500 owners.

Did you disable DMA like they said to do or leave it on?

Last time I flashed the drive, I left it enabled so I wonder if it will work again this time?


BTW did it actually increase the read speed of DVD rewritable media?

Does anyone know if there is difference in the firmware upgrades between the 500a and 500ul (internal vs external). I noticed that the upgrade folder was labeled differently for the DRX500ul for the 1.05d upgrade.

Had a batch of real shitty media that wasn't even being recognized before. It is now recognized and burn to the end. However, did not pass the verify copy test afterward. Guess when sony does burn correctly to this shitty media, then i will be extremely impressed. Right now I am only REAL impressed. The media is real shitty since it was limited to 1x. Maybe they do belong in the trash afterall. they did burn fine on a04 f.w 1.29

My 99 cent Accu's burn at 2x now too. I've only had time to try one (DVD video), but it burned and played perfectly in my JVC set top player.

I have upgrade successfully to 1.0f
but i find read speeds of dvd video roms haven.t increased to 4.0 as Sony said they should.With smartripper and dvd decrypter max read speed is still 2.0 max as it was with 1.0 d.
Anybody else found the same?

yes, dvd ripping of DVD VIDEO disks stayed the same (2x capped) in 1.0f
( imho, that will stay that way even in a future firmware releases until we see hacked version someday )

I am a little skeptical about downloading 1.0f from a Japanese site when I can just download 1.0e from the official site. If someone could just give a semi-decent explanation as to why Sony would not have a version of 1.0f on the US Site, I will download 1.0f. I'm just wondering if the DRU500a is made/constructed a little differently in Japan or a different region then it is in the US. Any info on this would be appreciated.

I have a panasonic E-30 DVD recorder, a Pacific digital DVD-R/ram burner and debating on a Pioneer A04/A05 or Sony. The burnner I ahve is only a 1x but it works fine adn uses the Princo media $1 ea just fine. I do not want to have to spend a fortune for blanks.

I love my E-30, I have also been debating to simply get another E-30 and forget another burnner with all the recent media problems.

I have burned one DVDPro 1X-rated and about five Princo 2X-rated since upgrading to 1.0f a day ago.
No problems.
Maybe I'll try a DVDPro at 2X.

I'll also try KHypermedia, to make sure they still work.
I am sure they will, since this firmware seems to have improved everything.

Supposedly (according to others who have tried) Princo (1X?), Accu 1X and Ritek 1X all burn at 2X now!!!!

I bought some of those Princo with white glossy top/purple bottom....still 1X after upgrade, but at least it will complete burning not like the previous firmware 1.0d.

This media is EXPENSIVE and their customer service SUCKS!!!! They told me that they keep on updating the media daily b/c the hardware companies are changing their firmware. Then, I ask him "SO, what's that mean?" That the media is going to be inconsistent if you buy it 2-3 weeks ago then today. FORGET THAT!!!!! Why buy media that you don't even know if you're getting the same quality/type? I submitted 4 emails and they only return one email and never heard from them again. Stay AWAY!!!

Don't need this "TRUE 2X" Crap...if you can get CONSISTENT media at the above site that will burn at 2X with the Sony DRU500A.

please let me know..what is the top color/bottom color...even accu is good...i just don't like it silver top..very easy to get finger print and shit...can you write on top of ritek?

like lux_a posted, it appears as if the 1.0f firmware upgrade does upgrade the dvd-r read speed from 2x to 4x...however this does not include dvd-r MOVIES...i tested with nero cd speed application, it showed 4x read speed with a ps2 dvd-r backup, and 2x speed reading a dvd-r movie....this is not great news seeing as i use the read function on the drive for dvd-r movies more than anything else...i doubt a later firmware upgrade will fix this, as it seems intentional....any ideas?

if anyone has tried the Samsung BeAll DVD-R discs from meritline.com please let me know, i wanna know how they work with the new firmware- they are great discs but the dru500a did not like them before 1.0f...

I am planning to test them this weekend if you don mind waiting. I will be working on my Studio 8 project so it might take longer since it is not guaranteed that it (S8.) will work.
