I'm burning Princo 2x (white top purple bottom) media on the Sony and all is great.

Thats where I get the media. I pay $2.97CAD/disc in spindles of 90.
The 1x is cheaper. I'm not sure if the 1x will burn at 2x. I'm going to get them to send me a 1x sample. When I get it I'll let the forum know how it went.

Guys with Accu media. Could you please provide me more info about your Accu discs ?

I have Accu disks too but they burn at 1x speed. Here are some related posts to Accu disks or 1x branded media that burn 2x.

I have try the Optodisc 1X DVD-R Golden one on my 500A, it works at 2X now!
I think this disc are reliable..

just a question, since you got the firmware from the Japan site, didn't it change the region of the drive??? Do commercial dvd's still play in it since the upgrade.
The reason I ask is that it will also affect ripping if the region is wrong.

Yes, no problem playing it on my standalone Apex 1500 and Philips 953 either. However, I put labels on my dvd movies. If you want the DVD covers and disc labels ya should check out this free awesome site:
