  1. I have one of the new Sony DRU-500A drives and it works great. I can rip a DVD to my hard drive and then use TMPGENC to make it into a DVD file to burn onto DVD-R or +R. The problem I'm seeing is this: Using the TMPGENC program I make the file size around 3.5 gigs and some movies will fit perfect onto the DVD-R or +R leaving about 400 mg of space left.

I use MyDVD for the burning. Other files are the same size and will not fit and MyDVD will not show the burn button as ready. So, on one movie I've had to redo it 3 times with TMPGENC to get it to fit. Why is this. The movie is 152 minutes, but the file size I finally had to make it was 2.7 gigs for it to fit on a 4.7 gig DVD+R. MyDVD shows with that 2.7 gig file, that I have 492 mb of space remaining on the DVD+R. What's the deal with this?

Why is a 2.7 gig file filling up my 4.7 gig disc?

    Thanks!

you should use ulead dvd movie factory also you should intenso dvd media i have no problems what so ever all i do is rip my dvd with smartripper encode it with tmpg then author the film for burn the rip process takes about 20-30 mins encoding this takes the most time about 10-16 hours best to leave through the night using the movie factory author and burn will take you about 30 mins i find this a whole lot better than ifoedit and nero, dvd decryptor and all that other crap

  4. use MyDVD for the burning
Thats your problem. MyDVD extracts the audio from the mpeg file and converts it to uncompressed PCM, taking up loads of room on the disk. Find an authoring package that will handle mpeg layer 2 audio (mp2) such as Uleads DVD WS or Dazzle DVD complete and this problems will be solved.

  5. I have absolutely no problems burning with the Sony DRU-500a. No, I have not upgraded any of the firmware or software. I just installed it like it came from the box. I'm using CompUSA DVD-R generic disc and I bought a box of Vertbatim DVD+R media at Sam's Club, really cheap and have had no problems burning with any of them.

Ok, so a 2.7 gig file filling up my 4.7 disk is related to my using MyDVD software? I've been ripping with SmartRipper and using tmpge for encode it and then using MyDVD to burn it. I will try another burning software and see how that does.

    Thanks!

definatly problem with MyDVD. I had the same problem. Try SpruceUp, I"ve found it to be easy, and supports ac3 and mp2 audio. So now my TMPGEnc encodes go into SpruceUp at the same size, can get almost 4-5 hours on DVD depending on how you reencode

  7. Well, I tried the Ulead DVD Workshop and the program was to stupid to realize that the video file I created with tmpgenc was to big to fit onto the 4.7 gig DVD disc until it got about 75% through the burning process and then errored out. So, now I have a coaster. At least MyDVD lets you know up front when you load the video file in if it's to big and will not even light up the burn button, if the file will not fit on the disc.

In tmpgenc, I created my file to be 3.5 gigs, still leaving 1 full gig of space for a magin of error and would not fit onto a 4.7 gig disc.

I found the program SpruceUp that someone suggested, but it's only a trial version and from what I can find, the company no longer supports or makes the program. So, it's only a trial version and you can't burn more than 30 minutes onto one disc

So, is about the only file size we can get onto a 4.7 gig DVD disc around 2.5 - 2.7 gigs? That's been about all I've been able to get on there. This that's alot of time encoding with tmpgen and then a lot more time trying to burn

  8. Somewhere within the settings of Ulead DVD WS you can tell it to use mp2 audio (can't remember exactly where). Then the space required on the disc will only be slightly more than the size of the original mpeg.
