Ok well, whe I burn xvid type DVD's it comes out perfectly fine, but when I try to brun Ac3 type dvds, it comes out terrible on the DVD. It tilts 45 degrees and turns a greenish color, also smears the colors around.

I use Nero (latest version) and im not sure what type CD's, I cant understand what is happening. What do I need to do? new cds? new codecs? new programs? what? ill try to upload a sample of what the video looks like when I burn it, till then, any ideas?

    A few questions:

What are you trying to create? A MPEG DVD or a Xvid DVD? There's no CDs involved here unless you are using them also.

You are using Nero to encode to MPEG DVD format? Try ConvertXToDVD or FAVC or something other than Nero.

Do you have a codec pack installed? That might explain a lot of the problems.

You would need to give us more information before anyone could make much more than a guess.

    And welcome to our forums.

I have ffdshow(alpha) instaled, ac3filter, and xvid codecs installed.

What I am Trying To Do

Burn a movie from my computer onto a DVD dics.

    Programs Installed

Nero 7, TMPGEnc 4 (i dont know how to use this), ffdshow(alpha), ac3filter, and xvid codecs installed

    What I want

To successfully burn a DVD movie onto a disc with no problems (duh)

    **Side Note**

Whenever I burn DVD movies which are in xvid format, they turn out fine (no problems), but when I try to burn anything iwth a different file format, it just doesnt play in WMP and doesnt play on my DVD player. I dont understand.

Firstly, dvd players cannot play Xvid disks. Many can play Divx disks.

Your computer video is in an avi format - there are zillions of different combination of video and audio codec and as long as your computer has these codecs then they will play fine. You only appear to have the Xvid codec which will explain why some files will not play on your PC.

But it's a totally different issue to make a disk that will play on a dvd player. The movie format will be different - mpeg2 and not avi.

There's no point to reply here and re-invent the wheel. Take a look at the various guides on the site 'convert' and 'author'. You have the software to do it and these will show you how to use it.

And i have no problem playing files on my comp, i can play every file known to man on here, i have the codecs. Its playing it on my DVD player is the problem.

unless you have NEW settop DVD player that says on the box that it is 'dvix compatible' it will not play avi files

    DVD files are vobs

    also you keep saying burn

you need to realize that nero is an 'ALL in one' program and there is more than one process involved and nero does not do them ALL real well

example you rip a CD and make mp3's you are converting wav format to mp3 format

computer videos avi, wmv, mkv, mpeg, etc... come in hundreds of format combinations , there is a video stream and a audio stream and depending on the final file extension ( file type container ) there are variations in which audio stream and which video stream can be used together

to make a REAL DVD, the files have to be converted to the proper streams

the process involves splitting the source into the (2) separate streams, converting the video to the correct DVD resolution & mpeg format including the correct 29.97 fps, converting the audio to either MP2 or AC3 ,and then joining them back together to create the DVD files ( vobs ) plus the index and menu files (ts) (info) these files are then but in a 'video_ts' folder

this folder is burned onto a DVD disc NOT a CD disc
it is way to large for a CD disc

nero does not do this very well

it is a good but NOT perfect burner engine, it works very well for making audio CDs

but for converting avi files into DVDs there are better programs and many are free . but only a few are 'all in one' drag drop 'one click' tools

so do you have a Dvix settop player, or do you mean you save avi files onto CD's and they play on your PC
which is just burning a data file

which is NOT the same , as creating a DVD

the basic settop DVD player plays DVD discs and some play VCD or scvd disc

these use a format like dvds but the file resolution and size is 1/2 to 1/4 the size and so is the quality

if i did not make it clear enough, try reading the 'what is' info in the upper left had corner of this page,

    what is a DVD

programs like convertxtodvd and avidtodvd or filmmachine are all in one

other programs can be use to do each step individually which gives you more control over the total quality and look of the final DVD

many people here use imgburn to actually burn the final files onto the DVD

ok thanks you guys. you have all been such a big help. I have been having the same problems still, but i tried to play it in another DVD player and it worked perfectly fine, but not on the other. I have been using DVD-R Cd's and i just recently bought some DVD-RW, to see if i can get those type of DVD's to work on my DVD player. I also checked on the front of the DVD player that i have been having issues with and it says it is DVD-RW compatible so i will see soon if it works. I dont use nero anymore, i use TMPGEnc to encode the video and audio and burn it on to a disc. And it seems to work like a charm. THanks again for all your help, i just had to mess around with the settings a bit.
