Indeed Sony released the 1.0e firmware as of a few hours ago. However, on the Japanese site, I found a firmware 1.0F before the release of 1.0E on the US site. Unfortunately, everything is in Japanese. It seems to be targetted for drives with firmware revisions 1.0c, 1.0d and 1.0e.

Maybe one of our Japanese board members can translate what's the difference with 1.0e ?

The new update has been pulled from the site....Why???????

I downloaded both the 1.0e and 1.0f. The first noticeable difference is that the latter file includes the other files that might be necessary to run the updater. It also contains a HTML and several .jpg files. I don't know whether the firmware itself is different since both appeared on the same day.

It's back up on the english site and is now version 1.0f, now that's the fastest revision change I've ever seen. Can't wait to get home and try it out, but then again at this rate Sony might be at 1.0r by the time I get off work.

That makes 3 of us, I have the original 1.0e that was released this morning, the 1.0f from the Japanese site, and the 1.0f zip file from the English site.

Ok I ran the update in windows XP pro. Once again the update appeared to go well but locked my computer up trying to reboot. Re-set the machine and all seems well. I am now burning a Memorex DVD-R ver. 2 which now detects as a 2x media. I am burning the green mile split with IFOEDIT95 and decrypter. So far it seems to work. I will try it on my laptop and apex 5131.



Can't wait to get the faster media.

I have successfully updated to 1.0f
Tried ripping a dvd with smartripper and noticed max speed is still 2.0
I was expecting upto 4.0 with this firmware update as Sony said it should increase read speeds, anybody else found the same?

just upgraded to 1f myself. I can now burn to Accu DVD-R media at 2x instead of 1x with 1d. I had a batch of real shitty media that is now recognized by the drive. However they still didn't get burned correctly. no matter, they are shitty and destined to be trashed anyway. I am thrilled that I don't have to spend a lot of money to be able to burn at 2x now. This is nice.

Now, if sony lets me burn to these shitty media correctly, i be even more impressed, but no matter, i am already impressed with them. btw, sony would only let me burn at 1x to these media. I guess they must be extremely shitty.

Wish i can tell everyone what kind of media they are. I got them from a friend who had success burning correctly to them with the a04 firmware 1.29.

Woohoo!

Just upgraded from 1.0d to 1.0f and can now burn Ritek media at TRUE 2x! (30 minutes for a full vurn vs 1 hour). I'm using the ritek "Gold DVD-R 4.7GB" media from meritline.com -- http://www.meritline.com/rithigqualgo.html

The Ritek media has worked out VERY well all in all. I've burned ~60 at 1x without any problems. I hope 2x works as well as 1x...

...Still not sure why people have problems with XP and the firmware tool..I've not had ANY problems running it with XP pro. Go figure.
