    What is VHS resolution

I mean like VCD is 320/240.
    SVCD is 480/480

I am encoding some still pics as AVI's. Shall I go with VHS or DVD resolution?

actually VHS doesnt have a resolution as far as i know

it uses a film which is unrestricted to resolution. most ppl are saying its a 320x240 resolution cuz its comparable quality. some are better, some are worse, but whatever.

  3. strictly speaking it is 480 interlaced lines, wich is like 360 progressive lines (these are visual anoligies) so its usually better than vcd and worse than svcd.

640x480 is TV standard; or at least NTSC tv.
    640x576 is europe TV

I wonder what a VCD at that resolution would look like.

IT would be like SVCD quality but using MPEG1

    that would make it xVCD...no?

therefore, the amount of time you can fit on one cd is variable...

In a way, you're talking apples and oranges, Greg, as televised video is usually measured in lines of resolution while computer video is measured by pixel count. However - 640 x 480 is the size of a "full-screen" computer monitor video, which is usually scanned down to NTSC- or PAL-quality video. In the case of VHS-quality NTSC, you're looking at 126,000 pixels (240 lines horizontal resolution x 525 lines of vertical resolution) at 59.97 fields (half-frames) per second, while full-screen computer video has a resolution of 307,200 pixels (640 lines across x 480 lines up and down) at 60 full frames a second. (For some reason that escapes me, horizontal resolution on televisions, VCRs, etc. is measured *vertically* on a resolution chart.) That means that a 640 x 480 screen gives you 585 lines of horizontal resolution, which is better than most current broadcast television is....

Confused yet? Think of how *I* feel - I have to live with this! <g>

    try 640 x 480

  11. Or 704x480, in computer pixels this tends to scale to TV well (double VCD res of 352x240).
