Hi,
I have a PS2 (one of the original ones) and I am trying to find out what it is compatible with in regards to DVD's. I have heard some say that it can play DVD-R and DVD-RW even DVD+R and DVD+RW
I would like to know what can it really play. I recently purchased Star Wars 2 and I put it in my PS2 to play the movie since my other dvd player was being used. And to my surprise I got nothing. It kept clicking and whirring trying to read and then at the end of waiting for almost 3-4 minutes I got READ ERROR. Can the PS2 play the Star Wars 2 DVD??? I have successfully played another dvd movie in the PS2 at an earlier time so I am pretty confused. Any light shed on this would be helpful.

most of the problems with ps2 not reading dvd's or games can be linked to dust in or on the laser eye.
they did a terrable job in insulating the drive from the intake of dust.
i clean about 10 PS-2 at my shop a week. all due to dust issues.
its easy to clean, but it does take a bit of work. take the caps off the bottom. then remove the 8 or 10 screws, then remove the void warrantee tag. dont worry you only have a 90 day warrantee from sony anyway.
watch that you remove the cover gently as the ribbon cable for the reset and door open button is taped to the top of the CD door. set that aside. and remove the 4 small phillips head screws that hold to top of the cd off
lift that up and that should expose the eye to view. look around for lots of dust
it helps to clean more areas if you plug it in (dont touch the power supply area!!!) and eject the tray door. so you can clean under it too.
windex with no ammonia works best for cleaning. as does bounty paper towel as bounty has no cardboard. unlike brawny
gently clean the laser eye and you sould be back in business.
if there is too much dust it may be to late as i can only get about three cleanings out of one before the laser gets too dirty and needs disasembled.
the next trick i do is i take a piece of furnace filter. the 3m ones work best. and i cut a small rectangle [ ] to fit around the drive door make sure that it does not get in the way of the door opening and closing but it will help keep alot more dust out of the ps2
other words of wisdom i tell my customers. dont let it get near carpet.
the ps2 love to suck in dust and everything else.
also vaccum out the front vent from time to time when it gets dirty too.
these steps will make a ps2 last alot longer than they normally do.
and also very important if your ps2 ever wont open or the door is jammed do not force it in any way!!!
take it apart as described above.
then you will see two small screws on the right side of the drive door front
take those screws off and the drive tray will come out gently lift up and out.
you will see a tread on the bottom of the drive tray. and a white knob sticking up inside the ps2 in front of the laser push the white knob all the way to the left. (the laser should lift up) then realign the drive door so the white knob is in the track.
i get about 5 a week with that problem. and if you force it you will break the white knob and then you have a nice ps2 paperweight.
i hope some of you find this helpful
if you need more help in how to take a ps2 apart there is lots of modchip sites with diagrams that can help you take it apart with pictures.
