  1. I have over 200 wmv files that needs to convert to mpeg, so that I can copy to VCD. I've been using TMPGEnc, but it takes forever to convert. I have tried to open multiple sessions, but it is still not fast enough. Is there anything out there that is significantly faster?
Any relies will be much appreciated.

I hate doing this to my "ole buddy" TMPGEnc, but I find Video Studio 6's Smart Renderer faster.
    Hello.

  3. Cinema Craft Encoder is significantly faster on My pc, problem is that the demo version encodes putting their logo in the video playback. Look around maybe youll find someone who can help with that though. Not on this site though sorry.

I don't know whta you level of acceptable quality, but..

Some months ago, BJ_M shared some of his expeirence with the
MainConcepts MPEG encoder, as well as some clips, in a comparison he
was making between it, CCE, LSX and TMPG...
If memory serves me, he went on saying how it was a little faster... or
was I reading something else, he, he...

There's also LSX too, that you might want to give a try at.
These are both inexpensively worth a try, but they may also include a
logo or watermark. I know that MainConcept does for their DV codec.

Sorry for the spelling (lsx) I think I may be off. My mind is somewheres'
    else though, at the moment.

  5. Quite a few encoders are faster, but I have not seen one that lets you have as much control over the finished product as TMPGEnc.

the MainConcept encoder is very very fast , does batch file encoding, and has good quality .

it has a lot of settings that can be tweaked but for the most part dont need to for standard stuff.

when it comes to fast *.avi to *.mpg encoding my choice would be DVMPEG, the speed is twice as TMPGEnc, ( in my PC )

" DVMPEG 5.0 is ultimately the fastest MPEG
compression software in the world "

    http://www.megavizyon.com/dvmpeg.html

it can export mpg directly to any video editing programs.

but when it comes to quality encoding, I think it's Tmpgenc

that link you listed was made in 1999 and is rather out of date -- notto throw to much water on your fire for dvmpeg (and i havnt tested the new version 6 out now for about a year) -- the quality was non to good at all ..

see this review here for a second opinion (where they though it was the worse encoder they have seen): http://www.tecoltd.com/enctest/enctest.htm

It should be pretty obvious that the "fastest in the world" encoder will have poor quality unless described otherwise.

Just a note to tomt995: you say "multiple sessions"... I hope you don't mean opening multiple copies of TMPGenc and running at once as all that will do is slow all of them down. You can use batch encoding and run TMPGenc all night (or for a week if you feel like it). If you have 250 files to convert you're surely willing to take a little time to do it, but if you're impatient then use the faster quality settings (ideally motion search if you're not using highest quality). You're not going to improve your time by more than 2x without reducing quality to crap or spending a lot of money, so just set up batch encoding while you're not using the computer!

I agree, so far tmpgenc is still the best encoder around. DVMPEG is no near to quality.

  11. In my hands I've found that MainConcepts is actually a bit faster than CCE, and it doesn't crash near as much. Quality wise it's a bit below TMPEGenc, but above most of the next group. MainConcepts doesn't offer a multipass-VBR yet. Which makes the process even faster because it always single pass (I typically use 2 pass with TMPEGenc or 3 pass with CCE). If they get the same quality improvements out of multipass that everyone else seems to, my guess is that it will equal if not surpass TMPEGenc quality. If you have high quality starting material and given the much more competitive price than CCE and are looking for a faster encoder I'd say at least give the MainConcepts demo a try.
